Software Engineer Resume Template

Engineering resumes get skimmed for three things: the stack you actually shipped with, the scale you worked at, and what changed because of your work. This template puts all three where a recruiter and an ATS look first. Open it in the builder, swap in your own projects, and download the PDF free.

Layout: HireFlow

Most engineering roles are filled through Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby or Workday. A single-column layout keeps your skills and dates in reading order for all of them.

Section order: Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education. New grads can move Projects and Education above Experience.

How to fill in a software engineer resume

Lead with the stack, then prove it

List languages and frameworks in the Skills section, then make sure each one appears inside at least one bullet. A skill that only shows up in a list reads as a keyword dump to a hiring manager.

Show scale with real numbers

Requests per second, users, data volume, latency, deploy frequency, or team size. Pick the one that matters for the role. If you do not know the exact figure, use an honest range you can defend in an interview.

Keep links clickable and short

GitHub and a portfolio link belong in the header. Pin the two or three repositories you want a reviewer to open, and make sure the README explains what the project does.

Skip skill bars and ratings

A bar that says you are 80% at Python tells a parser nothing and invites the wrong question. Plain text skills grouped by type (Languages, Frameworks, Infrastructure) work better.

Turn duties into results

Recruiters skim for outcomes. Rewrite task bullets with what changed and how you know.

Software Engineer resume FAQ

Should a software engineer resume be one page?

One page is right for most engineers with under 8 to 10 years of experience. Senior and staff engineers with several relevant roles can use two pages if every bullet earns its place.

Do I need a projects section?

If you are early career or changing stacks, yes. Projects show the work your job titles do not. Experienced engineers can fold the best side projects into one short section or drop it.

Is a two-column resume bad for software engineering jobs?

Not always, but it is a risk. Some parsers read straight across the page and mix your sidebar skills into your job history. A single-column layout removes that risk at no cost.
