Mid-level finance candidates across the EU send polished two-page CVs that recruiters love on paper. The portal accepts the PDF. Then the preview lists your 2017 internship above your 2024 group reporting role, and IFRS sits in Skills with no dated proof.
Before you rebuild anything, check your resume for free on the export you plan to attach. You are checking whether required terms extract from experience bullets, not whether the Europass template still looks official. A qualified European mid-level finance CV should not die because a table pushed dates into the wrong column.
Job searching across borders is already draining, and reformatting feels like you're erasing a CV culture you were taught in school. This isn't about shame. Greenhouse ingests your file, extracts text, and maps blocks into searchable fields. EU finance CVs often arrive as Europass exports, Canva layouts, or Word templates with a photo header and competency stars. The parser reads columns out of order. Dates in a right margin import before job titles. Education sections swallow Skills keywords. Your consolidation scope never lands next to a dated role.
The recruiter view depends on parsed order, not your PDF design. When Greenhouse shows a 2018 audit internship above a 2024 financial analyst role, title search misses your current band. When IFRS dumps into Skills without bullets, you read as a tools list, not a mid-level hire who closed month-end.
European norms vary by country. Photos, two-page length, and degree-first ordering are common locally. Greenhouse employers hiring in Dublin, Frankfurt, or Amsterdam still run the same parser US teams use. The upload file is a text importer, not a cultural statement.

Greenhouse parsing for European mid-level finance CVs: five steps
Work in order. Each step ends with a pass or fail check so you know whether to continue or stop and rebuild the export.
Step 1: Run the Greenhouse text-select test
Open your PDF in a desktop reader. Select all text. Paste into Notepad or plain TextEdit.
Before: Paste is empty or shows odd symbols. Greenhouse will see the same blank field.
After: Paste shows employer names, titles, IFRS terms, and dates in reading order.
Fail here? Rebuild in Word or Google Docs. Export DOCX first, then PDF from that DOCX only if you still want PDF.
Step 2: Flatten Europass and two-column layouts
Before: Dates sit in a right Europass column. Language levels use star graphics. Greenhouse reads dates before titles.
After: Each role is four lines: Title | Employer | City or Remote | Month Year to Month Year. Bullets sit directly under that block.
Remove the Europass logo row, photo box, and colored competency bars. Spell languages in a simple list: English C1, German B2.
I've screened Greenhouse profiles where a Frankfurt treasury CV looked perfect in PDF and parsed with the master's degree block above the current role. Flattening one column fixed the sort without changing a single metric.
Step 3: Standardize European dates to Month Year
Mixed 15/03/2021, 03/2021, and 2021 alone in one file scramble current-role detection. Pick Month Year everywhere: March 2021 to Present. Put dates on the employer line or directly under title.
Before: 01/09/2019 to 30/06/2021 for prior role, Present alone on current role with no month.
After: September 2019 to June 2021 for prior employer, then July 2021 to Present for current. Preview should list July 2021 role first every time you refresh upload.
Edge case: maternity or career gap in EU markets where gaps are normal. One honest line beats a table hack that hides months. Edge case: short post-MBA internship stacked under degree. Move internship into Experience with dates so Greenhouse does not file it under Education only.
Step 4: Move IFRS, SAP, and consolidation proof into bullets
Mid-level finance reqs ask for standards and systems inside scope, not tag clouds. Highlight three must-haves from the posting. Rewrite bullet one so one lands in the first eight words.
Before: Skills sidebar lists IFRS 16, SAP FI, Hyperion, Excel, teamwork. Current role bullets say "supported month-end" with no standard named.
After: Bullet one: Owned IFRS 16 lease roll-forward for 42 contracts in SAP FI; cut manual reconciliation 9 hours per close. Skills holds only posting gaps bullets do not cover yet.

Step 5: Export DOCX and verify Greenhouse preview
Save Firstname-Lastname-CV.docx from Word or Download as DOCX from Google Docs. Upload on the employer apply page without submitting yet.
Scroll the parsed preview. Current finance role should appear first. Education should not contain SAP keywords alone.
If DOCX parses clean and PDF does not, submit DOCX. Keep the designed PDF for human events only when locals expect it.
Copy-paste Experience skeleton after layout is flat:

Before: Header image and "Europass" banner import above your name. Experience shifts down two screens.

Listing every certification in Skills instead of bullets
ACCA, CFA Level II, and CPA tags in a sidebar do not prove you ran consolidation close. Move the credential next to the role where you used it, or one line under Education. Greenhouse search still finds the string inside a dated block.
Uploading a password-protected or scanned PDF
Bank-internal CVs sometimes export with security flags or scan signatures as images. Greenhouse cannot extract text. Remove protection and rebuild from source DOCX.
Degree-first ordering for corporate finance roles
Before: Two-page CV leads with master's thesis and Erasmus detail. Current analyst role starts mid-page two.
After: Experience first for corporate reqs. Education holds degree, school, year. Thesis title only when the posting asks for research depth.
This will not fix applying to VP roles with analyst-scope history. It stops a qualified European mid-level finance CV from looking junior because Greenhouse sorted Education above your last three closes.
Watch language proficiency bars and digital skill icons in EU templates. They look polished in Word and paste as empty squares in Notepad. Replace each graphic row with a typed list before export.
