Payroll titles and market titles disagree all the time. Startups hand out quirky labels. Enterprises keep you one band low for budget reasons. Your resume still has to read true in ten seconds, and it won't if the title invents scope.
You're not asking permission from the internet. You're aligning what you did with what recruiters search. That alignment breaks when the title outruns the bullets or when you hide a title HR will repeat on a verification call.

Why the title line matters more than you think
Recruiters search on titles before they read bullets. In Greenhouse they type Boolean strings. In Workday they scan the employment grid. A mismatch between title and bullets feels like a typo or a lie.
ATS matching also weights the job title field. An understated label can hide qualified work. An inflated label can get you screened in and rejected on the phone when the story does not hold.
The resume is a marketing document, not a legal record. That freedom stops where verification starts. HR will confirm what payroll said, not what sounded best on paper.
Contract and staffing roles add another layer. The check often lists the agency as employer. Your resume can show the client in the company line and the function in the title when the bullets prove client work.

When you can change your job title on a resume
Fair changes fall into three buckets: translation, scope catch-up, and promotion the system never updated.

Promotion without a payroll update is common in small teams. If you ran the function for six months before HR changed the record, list the higher title with dates that match when duties shifted, and keep offer letters or review notes in your own folder in case a screen asks.
Bullets must match the label
Before: Project Manager title with bullets about taking notes in standups and updating spreadsheets.
After: Project Coordinator title with the same bullets, plus one line about owning the RAID log and cutover checklist for a twelve-person workstream.
Sometimes the honest fix is a stronger bullet, not a louder title.

When you cannot change the title
Invented seniority is fraud. Associate to Principal with no scope change will not survive a reference call.
Cross-function jumps are fraud. Marketing Coordinator to Engineering Lead when you never shipped code is an instant pass.

After: Customer Success Manager with the same bullets. That is a title swap without proof.
I've screened files in Workday where the title said Director and every bullet was individual contributor work. The mismatch ended the screen faster than a weak bullet would have.

Check the file after you edit titles

Can you change your job title on a resume? Only when bullets already tell the truth the payroll label hid. If bullets do not show the level, fix the bullets first.

The test is whether you can walk an interviewer through the same duties under either title. If you cannot, revert to the official line and fix the bullets instead.
Most verification vendors confirm employer, dates, and official title with HR. They do not expect your resume to match payroll word for word when you stayed one level apart. They do expect you to explain a jump from Coordinator to Director. Keep adjustments modest or add the official title in parentheses on the resume line.
Mirror the posting only when your work supports it. If the req says Customer Success Manager and you ran renewals and QBRs, that label fits. If you only answered tickets, keep Service Specialist and prove volume in bullets. Keyword stuffing a title without scope backfires in the recruiter screen.
Keep short roles closer to payroll. A three-month internship labeled as Lead reads invented. For contract work, list the client and the function you performed. If the staffing firm gave you a generic title, you may clarify in parentheses: Analyst (contract via [firm]) when the bullets show analyst work.
