ATS headings that recruiters actually recognize: standard labels like Work Experience and Education parse in Workday; creative titles dump bullets into uncategorized fields.

Your resume isn't failing because you lack a clever section title. It's failing because the parser can't tell where your jobs start when the label says Where I've Made Impact instead of Work Experience.

Check your resume for free after you rename headings. Parser errors hide behind pretty templates, and you won't see them until bullets land in the wrong field.

Tonight's job: pick section header labels that both parsers and recruiters map correctly. You don't need a redesign. You need boring labels on the right lines.

Below you'll see which strings route bullets into Experience, which creative headings dump content into misc blocks, the few exceptions that still work, and what to change before your next upload.

Quick Wins

  • Rename creative section titles to Work Experience and Education.
  • Run a paste test to confirm job bullets stay grouped under each role.
  • Keep Skills as a plain list, not a graphic cloud above your name.

How parsers turn headings into fields

An ATS doesn't read your resume like a person scanning for design flair. It reads stored text top to bottom and looks for heading-shaped lines: short, bold, often alone on a row, followed by employer names and Month Year dates.

When the label matches a known bucket, bullets under it route into Experience, Education, or Skills. When the label is novel, the parser still has to put the text somewhere. That somewhere is usually Summary, Additional Information, or an uncategorized block recruiters skip.

Recruiters follow the same map. I've screened stacks of these in Workday and Greenhouse, and the file that wins uses boring labels recruiters have seen ten thousand times, not a fresh metaphor for your career arc.

Headings aren't decoration. They're routing instructions. Wrong label, wrong bucket, and your best bullet never shows up where the recruiter filters for job history.

For how layout can scramble order even when headings are correct, see why fancy layouts break parsing . A perfect Experience label in a sidebar still imports like a footnote.

ATS headings that recruiters actually recognize

You don't need one magic phrase. You need a label close enough that Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, Taleo, and iCIMS all route content the same way. These are the strings that survive import most often on US corporate stacks.

Section Use this label Avoid
Jobs Professional Experience, Work Experience, Employment History Where I've Made Impact, Career Highlights, My Journey
Degrees Education Academic Background & Achievements, Learning Path
Tools Skills, Technical Skills, Core Competencies What I Bring to the Table, Superpowers
Top summary Summary, Professional Summary, Profile About Me, Who I Am, Elevator Pitch
Unpaid proof Volunteer Experience, Relevant Projects Giving Back, Community Involvement (without dates)

Pick one label per section and stick with it through the whole file. Switching between Work Experience on page one and Professional Journey on page two reads like two different templates stitched together, and parsers sometimes treat the second label as a new misc block.

Which sections US systems read first is a separate routing question. For field order, read ATS resume sections US systems read first .

When a non-standard label still works

Creative headings aren't always wrong. They're wrong when they replace the only Experience block on a corporate US application. These forks are the ones that still parse reliably.

Publications or Patents as their own heading when you're applying to research, legal, or engineering roles that expect dated entries. Keep Education separate. Don't fold publications into a poetic My Work in the World block.

Certifications or Licenses when the posting lists required credentials and you have more than three. A short Certifications block below Education parses cleaner than hiding AWS and PMP inside Skills.

Selected Projects for entry-level or career-change files where paid job history is thin. Use it as a second block with Month Year dates, not as a replacement for Work Experience when you have three full-time roles to show.

If you're unsure, default to the standard label. Exceptions earn their own heading only when the posting asks for that proof explicitly.

What to change on your file tonight

Open the version you'll upload. Scan heading lines only. You're renaming labels, not rewriting career story. Twenty minutes is enough if you stop tweaking bullets mid-pass.

Rename any metaphor heading to Work Experience or Professional Experience. Move Skills below that block unless you're entry-level and tools are your main proof. Change About Me to Professional Summary. Save, export, paste into Notepad, and confirm section order reads top to bottom without gaps.

Before: Where I've Made Impact as the only jobs heading. Workday import dumps bullets under Additional Information while Experience stays empty.
After: Professional Experience on its own line in Heading 2. Same bullets, correct field, recruiter filters find your current title.

Before: What I Bring to the Table above Work Experience with Python and Tableau listed first.
After: Skills below Experience. Parser reads job scope before tools, which matches how recruiters scan corporate reqs.

Before: Academic Background & Achievements with degree, dean's list, and three club lines under one creative title.
After: Education with degree and graduation date only. Clubs move to one bullet under your most recent job if they're still relevant.

Creative headings that land in the wrong bucket

Metaphor job sections. Career Story, Impact Zone, and Professional Journey don't map to Experience in most US stacks. The jobs are still in your file. They're just not where filters look.

Emoji or icon rows as headings. A briefcase glyph isn't text. Parsers skip it and attach the next readable line to whatever came before, often your summary paragraph.

Combined mega-headings. Education, Certifications & Awards on one line splits unpredictably. Some systems keep the degree. Some dump the whole block into misc.

Bold body text posing as headings. A bold sentence inside a paragraph isn't a section break. Use Word Heading 2 or an equivalent style so export keeps the line isolated.

Employer names matter as much as headings. If titles parse but companies don't, read how to format company names so ATS doesn't misread them before you chase keyword density.

Confirm headings before you upload

After you rename labels, export the upload file and paste all text into Notepad. Your four core headings should appear in order with job titles and dates directly underneath Experience, not floating under Summary.

Run the free ATS checker on that exact export. Fix heading routing before you tailor bullets to the posting.

If the role also wants a cover letter in the same portal session, generate a cover letter in plain block formatting so both files parse cleanly on one apply.

Heading rule for tonight

Boring labels win. Work Experience, Education, Skills, Professional Summary. Rename first, tailor bullets second. If the parser can't find your jobs, no amount of keyword work saves the upload.

Job searching is already draining. A mislabeled section shouldn't be the reason your proof never reaches a human screen.

Frequently asked questions

No, but close variants parse most reliably: Professional Experience, Work Experience, or Employment History for jobs; Education for degrees; Skills or Technical Skills for tools. Creative titles like Where I've Made Impact or My Journey often land bullets in uncategorized or summary fields in Workday and iCIMS. Rename the heading before you rewrite bullets.

Yes when the line is a real heading style, not bold body text. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE in Heading 2 or bold 12-point Arial parses the same as title case for most US corporate stacks. ALL CAPS alone does not fix a heading the parser does not recognize. Pair caps with a standard label recruiters expect.

After Experience for most US corporate roles. Parsers read top to bottom. A Skills block above jobs can import tools before your current title in Greenhouse, which makes keyword matches look like your headline skill instead of job scope. Put Skills after Experience unless the posting is entry-level and your tools are the proof.

Export the same file you upload, paste into Notepad, and read section order top to bottom. Upload to a parse check with the posting attached. If job bullets appear under Additional Information or Summary while Skills duplicated, rename headings to standard labels and re-export before you touch keyword density.
