You click Upload, the spinner runs, and either the portal throws an error or it smiles back with empty job history. That's not you being unqualified. It's usually a file the career site won't accept or a layout its importer can't read.

Green check, empty profile. The attachment lands but titles and dates never populate. That's layout: tables, text boxes, multi-column templates, or contact details trapped in the header region.
Scrambled fields. Company names show up where job titles should sit, or skills appear above employment history. Reading order broke. The PDF still looks polished to you because Word or a design tool is rendering a grid the importer does not understand.
If you're not sure which bucket you're in, screenshot the error and open the application preview. The preview tells you whether parsing failed even when the upload message looked friendly.
What ADP does after you attach a resume

Mistakes that keep ADP upload problems alive
Treating a parse failure like a keyword gap. Adding job-description phrases will not populate a blank title field caused by a table cell.
Re-uploading the same export ten times. If the layout still uses text boxes, every retry produces the same empty profile.

Open the true source in Word or Google Docs. Paste into a blank single-column document if the template is heavily designed. Remove tables, text boxes, icons used as section labels, and images that only decorate the page.
Use Experience, Education, and Skills as headings. Write dates on the line under the title, not in a right-aligned column. Save as a simple filename like Firstname-Lastname-Resume.docx with no special characters.
Run the plain-text test: select all, copy, paste into a notes app. Order should read contact, summary, jobs with dates, education, skills. If anything is missing, fix the source again before you upload.

Re-upload in ADP on desktop Chrome when possible. Confirm the filename appears on the review page, then walk every auto-filled field. Switch DOCX to PDF or PDF to DOCX once if a clean file still hard-rejects.
If the portal still fails after one format swap, email the recruiter with the job title, req ID, browser used, and the lean DOCX attached. Don't send only a screenshot of the error.
When the file is clean but upload still stalls
Not every failure is layout. Session timeouts, mobile browsers, and aggressive extensions can break the transfer before parsing starts. Try desktop Chrome or Edge, upload early in the form, and wait for a filename on the review screen before you answer the remaining questions.
Disable VPN during upload if the progress bar hangs. Use an incognito window if ad blockers interfere with the widget. Click Upload once; double clicks can create duplicate partial records.
