Your template has icons, color blocks, and a photo. Mine's Calibri on white. You're not losing on talent. You're losing on import order when Workday builds the profile recruiters sort.
Job searching is draining enough without guessing why silence hits. If the posting fits your background, start by checking whether the file is plain enough to parse before you rewrite every bullet.
Plain does not mean you delete achievements. It means you stop letting design eat the text layer. Recruiters won't compliment your margins. They will notice when bullet two imports blank and they move on.
You'll still tailor keywords after layout passes. Don't skip that step. Fix structure first so the words you add tonight actually land in the profile view.
If you've been told to brand yourself, that's fine on LinkedIn. The application file is a data import. Treat it like a form, not a poster.
Check your resume for free on tonight's export. If employers show up empty in the preview, no amount of keyword stuffing fixes that screen.
Use the grouped checklists below on the version you'll upload. Each block is a pass/fail gate, not a design opinion.
What recruiters mean when they say plain
Decision rule: if the ATS profile view misses an employer, treat the file as not plain yet. Plain is not ugly. It is predictable: contact block, summary or headline, experience newest first, education, skills last unless the posting demands certs up top.
Parsers walk the file like a tape reader. Columns make them jump sideways. Text boxes become blank fields. Icon fonts turn into nonsense characters where your title should be.
Humans skim the same import in the ATS. When bullet three is empty in the profile, they do not open your PDF to hunt. They move to the next row in the queue.
Greenhouse and Lever show the same pattern: a clean PDF attachment beside a messy text profile. The attachment is backup. The profile is what gets filtered, sorted, and forwarded.
That is why candidates with plain exports often hear back sooner. Not because recruiters love ugly files. Because the system and the human see the same story in the same order.
Before: Two-column Canva export with skills in a sidebar.
After: Single column with skills under experience and posting terms in bullet one.
Before: Logo header and progress bars for skill levels.
After: Text skill lines and proof in bullets, not graphics.

Tonight's checklist: why plain resumes get more interviews
Run these groups on the file you'll attach. Stop at the first fail and fix it before tailoring verbs.
Layout and columns
- One column only; no sidebars or split headers.
- No tables for experience rows; use lines and standard bullets.
- Margins between 0.5 and 1 inch so lines do not wrap oddly on import.
Type and color
- Calibri, Arial, or Helvetica at 10 to 12 point body text.
- Black or dark gray text; skip colored section backgrounds.
- Standard round bullets, not wingding symbols.
Export and paste test
- Copy the whole doc into Notepad; employers and dates should survive.
- Upload the same file to a portal field and open the profile preview if shown.
- Rename the file Firstname-Role-Company.docx so coordinators find it.
Copy-paste header block (plain contact):

I've screened stacks of these in Greenhouse, and the callback file is almost always boring on layout and specific in bullet one.
Pair this pass with resume formatting errors that break ATS parsing if paste test still drops section headers.
Decoration traps that look fine in Preview
- Skill meters and stars: parsers read them as empty space or garbage characters.
- Photos and logos: waste header room and sometimes block contact parsing.
- Footer page numbers: duplicate or drop on import, which confuses date ranges.
- Hyper-styled templates from design apps: pretty PDF, scrambled text layer.
- Tiny font to fit a third page: OCR misses digits in dates and metrics.
This will not fix applying ten levels above your scope. It stops a qualified plain file from dying before a human compares you to the posting.
When a friend gets callbacks on a plain doc, ask what their paste test looked like. You'll usually find a boring layout and a sharp first bullet, not a secret template shop.
Rebuild plain without starting from zero
Strip layout in Word or Google Docs export to DOCX, then move bullets back in order. Do not retype achievements; move blocks.
Build your resume in a single-column template if you need a clean base tonight.
After structure is plain, score your job match against the posting so keywords land in experience, not only in a skills sidebar you removed.
When the portal wants a short note, generate a cover letter that matches the same plain styling as the resume file.
Upload order for tonight
Sequence: flatten layout, run paste test, tailor bullet one to the posting, export, upload, then stop redesigning.
Plain files do not guarantee an interview. They guarantee recruiters judge the same words you wrote, in the order you meant, inside the ATS view they actually use.

Frequently asked questions
Your portfolio carries the visual story. The application file should still parse. Submit a plain Word or PDF for the ATS and link a portfolio site in the header if the posting allows it. Never trade parse order for a sidebar on the file recruiters import.
Plain describes structure, not weak content. Strong verbs, scoped bullets, and posting language still belong on the page. Decoration is what breaks import. Boring is a content problem you fix in bullet one, not with icons.
Keep standard bold on job titles and employers. Skip text boxes, icons, and colored backgrounds. If paste into Notepad still shows employers in order, you're close. If dates vanish, simplify before you apply again.
Your screen renders design. The parser often does not. Plain files align what you see with what Greenhouse stores. When those match, keyword rank and recruiter skim time improve because nothing is missing from the profile view.
