Social worker resume keywords for US ATS: license strings, setting vocabulary, and bullet rewrites for clinical, hospital, and school roles in Workday and iCIMS.

You earned the MSW, passed the exam, and still get silence from county portals. The file often parses fine. The vocabulary doesn't match what that req searches.

Start with the export you'll upload. check your resume for free against the posting you saved. If Licensure doesn't appear as plain text, fix that before you rewrite bullets.

Below are keyword clusters and bullet teardowns for three common US tracks. Copy the block that matches tonight's apply, then trim anything you can't defend on a screen.

Quick wins

  • Put license abbreviation in summary and Licensure line.
  • Lead bullet one with setting plus one intervention you run.
  • Name the EHR under the employer that used it.

License and title strings parsers catch

US ATS filters on credentials the way clinical roles filter on scope. Workday and iCIMS store text in order. If LMSW or LCSW only appears inside a logo header, search may never see it.

Match the posting's title band, not your internal job label. Clinical Social Worker, Medical Social Worker, and School Social Worker pull different keyword sets. One master file is fine. One generic upload is not.

Core strings to keep selectable: license name and abbreviation, state, NPI if you use one in healthcare settings, MSW program if the req asks for accredited graduate work, and practice setting nouns like outpatient behavioral health, acute care, or school district.

If the posting emphasizes Lead with these strings
Independent clinical practice LCSW, LICSW, diagnostic assessment, treatment plan
Care coordination discharge planning, interdisciplinary rounds, SNF placement
School-based services IEP, 504 plan, MTSS, special education consultation

Soft phrases like compassionate or dedicated rarely appear in req text. They won't hurt you, but they won't replace a missing license line either.

For section order after upload, see resume sections ATS reads first . Licensure buried on page two arrives late to both parser and skim.

Before: Summary says "compassionate helper"; Licensure missing.
After: Summary opens "LCSW | Clinical Social Worker" with state license on its own line.

Keyword lists and bullet rewrites

Pick one cluster. Mirror six to eight exact phrases from the req inside Experience, not only in Skills.

Outpatient behavioral health

Common filters: case management, biopsychosocial assessment, treatment plan, trauma-informed care, CBT, motivational interviewing, crisis intervention, DSM-5 documentation, ICD-10, Avatar, Welligent, caseload size.

Before: "Provided therapy to clients in community setting."
After: "LCSW | Managed caseload of 42 adults in outpatient behavioral health; documented biopsychosocial assessments and treatment plans in Avatar with weekly CBT and MI sessions."

Hospital medical social work

Common filters: discharge planning, care coordination, interdisciplinary rounds, utilization review, Epic or Cerner, SNF placement, hospice referral, readmission reduction, crisis intervention, abuse reporting, Medicare and Medicaid navigation.

Before: "Supported patients and families on the unit."
After: "Medical Social Worker | Led discharge planning on a 28-bed med-surg unit; coordinated SNF and home health in Epic and joined daily interdisciplinary rounds for high-readmission cases."

School social work

Common filters: IEP, 504 plan, MTSS, special education, school-based counseling, threat assessment, McKinney-Vento, district policy, consultation with teachers and administrators.

Before: "Worked with students facing challenges."
After: "School Social Worker | Facilitated IEP and 504 meetings for 18 students; delivered MTSS tier-two groups and documented progress notes per district policy."

County and state government roles

Government reqs often repeat mandated reporter, child welfare, foster care, permanency planning, court reports, and home visits. They also name document systems you must type exactly when listed.

Before: "Assisted families involved with the system."
After: "Child Welfare Social Worker | Managed permanency planning caseload of 16 families; submitted court reports and documented home visits per state policy in [system name from posting]."

Copy-paste summary skeleton (edit to honest facts):

LCSW | [Setting] Social Worker | [City, ST]
Licensure: Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), State of [XX], #[number]
Summary: [Setting] social worker with [X] years in [population]; Epic/Avatar/Welligent;
case management; [modality]; bilingual [language] if true.

Copy-paste bullet formula: [License or title] | [Action verb] + [posting noun] + [metric or caseload] + [EHR or artifact].

Skills row after bullets

Once must-haves live in Experience, repeat two posting terms in Skills using the same spelling. Example row for a clinical req: LCSW, case management, CBT, motivational interviewing, biopsychosocial assessment, Avatar. Skip modalities you cannot tie to a dated role if asked.

Summary stays short: license, setting, years in population, one EHR, one intervention. Don't duplicate the whole Skills list in prose. Recruiters read summary once, then jump to latest job.

I've screened iCIMS exports where Skills listed every modality but Experience never said LCSW or case management under a dated employer. The file looked tailored. The stored text still read junior.

Before: Keywords live only in a sidebar Skills cloud.
After: Each must-have from the posting appears in bullet one or two under the matching job dates.

If you're pivoting settings, read how to become a social worker for license path context, then still tailor keywords per posting rather than sending one generic MSW file.

When social worker resume keywords backfire

  • Listing LCSW in Skills while your Licensure line still says LMSW.
  • Pasting school IEP terms onto a hospital apply because you "want both doors open."
  • Claiming Epic without a bullet that names the unit where you charted.
  • Repeating trauma-informed care in every line until dates disappear from view.
  • Using icon grids or two columns that drop Licensure on plain-text paste.

For stuffing traps, see why keyword stuffing lowers resume ranking . One natural use per must-have beats shouting the same phrase eight times.

Before: "I'll add every modality so the filter likes me."
After: "I'll prove the six terms they'd ask about in minute one of the screen."

Test keywords on the upload file

After rewrites, scan the same PDF or DOCX you'll send to the county or hospital site. Missing Licensure in the preview means layout trouble, not a bad keyword list.

Run a plain-text paste before any scanner. Search the paste for your license abbreviation, the posting title, and one EHR name. If any of those strings fail Ctrl+F, the ATS won't magically infer them from layout.

Government and hospital portals rarely allow re-upload after submit. Tailor on a saved copy named with employer and date so you don't overwrite your master MSW file by accident.

Score your job match with the posting text. Use gaps to adjust bullet two on the employer that matches the setting, not to invent credentials.

Hospital pipelines that run on Lever still break on hidden text. Read optimizing your resume for Lever ATS in US healthcare roles if your export drops Experience on import.

Match setting, then prove dates

This social worker resume keywords US ATS list only works when strings sit under real employers. Pick the cluster that matches the req, rewrite two bullets, and leave off modalities you can't discuss for five minutes.

Save the posting PDF with your tailored file name so a phone screen matches the language already on the upload.

When bullets align, repeat one caseload or outcome metric in a short letter with Generate a cover letter without introducing new buzzwords the parser never saw on the resume.

Frequently asked questions

Mirror the posting title, your license level with abbreviation, practice setting, intervention models you actually run, and documentation systems tied to employers with dates. County reqs often filter on LCSW or independent clinical license language. School reqs filter on IEP and MTSS instead of therapy modality lists.

Yes when the posting names a required license level. Put the full credential near the top and again under Licensure with state and number if the form asks. Do not claim LCSW if you hold LMSW only. Credential checks run early in public-sector and hospital pipelines.

License and title belong in summary and a dedicated Licensure line. Epic, Avatar, or Welligent belong in Experience bullets under the employer that used them. Skills can repeat two posting-critical terms after they appear in dated bullets.

Usually generic bullets without setting vocabulary, credentials missing from selectable text, or a two-column template that hides keywords from Workday and iCIMS parsers. Paste plain text and compare against the saved posting before you upload to a government portal.
