6 min read · Resume section order
You're staring at the template wondering if the university block should jump the line. If you've got analyst or coordinator titles that match the posting, moving your degree up won't rescue a weak top bullet. It'll just hide the job that already proves you can do the work.
But if your last three roles were in retail and you just finished a computer science program, leading with education above experience on your resume is the honest story. The hiring manager needs to see the bridge before they scroll to unrelated cashier lines.
Check your resume for free after you reorder sections. You want Education and Experience headings the parser can label in Workday or Greenhouse, not text trapped in a table column.
Below: a two-question test, before-and-after stacks, and a copy-paste order block.
Quick Wins
- Open the posting and note whether it lists years of experience or degree requirements first.
- Count relevant full-time years in the target field, not total résumé years.
- Keep one master file; duplicate before you move sections for a campus program.
What "education above experience" actually changes
You're not picking which degree to list first inside the Education block. That stays reverse chronological. You're picking whether the Education heading sits above the Experience heading on page one.
Recruiters skim top to bottom. Parsers still ingest both sections when headings are plain text. If your strongest proof is a job title three inches down, a tired screener may never get there.
For line-by-line degree formatting once placement is set, see education section formatting for ATS . This page is only the order decision.
Two questions, then paste your section order
Run both questions against the posting you're applying to tonight. If either answer points up, education can lead.
- Relevance: Do your last one or two jobs use the same language as the req (title, tools, scope)? If yes, experience leads.
- Credential: Does the posting treat a specific degree, program, or license as the main filter? If yes and your jobs don't match, education can lead.
Before/after: recent graduate into the field
Before: Summary, Experience with campus retail and food service, Education with B.S. Computer Science May 2026 at the bottom.
After: Summary, Education with B.S. Computer Science and capstone line, Projects or internships, then part-time jobs collapsed to one line each.
Before/after: five years in the same function
Before: Education with MBA and bachelor's above four years of finance analyst roles because the candidate is proud of the MBA.
After: Summary, Experience with forecast ownership bullets, Education with MBA on one line under the jobs, Skills only if keywords aren't in bullets.
Before/after: career change with a new program
Before: Experience leading with ten years in teaching, Education at the end.
After: Summary naming instructional design pivot, Education with graduate certificate and relevant coursework, Relevant Experience subset, then older teaching roles shortened.
I've skimmed stacks of these in Greenhouse, and education above experience only works when the degree or cert on top clearly matches the req title. Otherwise it reads like the candidate is hiding weak jobs.

Order mistakes that waste a good degree
Education first with five years of matching titles. You look junior. Lead with the job that mirrors the req.
Hiding a required license under old jobs. Order education up if you must, but put Licenses or Certifications higher when the posting treats them as gates.
Using a two-column template. Education in a side column often parses after experience anyway, so your visual "top" is not the parser's order.
Confirm the file still parses
Upload the new version to the free ATS resume checker and confirm Education and Experience still extract as separate blocks. A pretty reorder in Word means nothing if headings landed inside a text box.
If you're building a campus version from scratch, use the free resume builder with single-column sections so you don't fight the template twice.
Pick order tonight, then stop tinkering
Should you put education above experience on your resume? If you've got relevant years in the field, no. If your degree or new program is the proof the posting is buying, yes. Run the two-question test, paste the block that matches, and send the application.
- Lead with experience when job titles match the req language.
- Lead with education when jobs don't and the credential does.
- Duplicate files per track instead of one confused order for every role.
When you're done reordering, generate a cover letter that names the same proof your top section shows. Then run a free resume check so section headings still parse before you hit submit.

Frequently asked questions
Put education above experience when your degree is the strongest proof for this role and your work history is thin, unrelated, or still in school. If you have several years of relevant titles and metrics, lead with experience. The parser still reads both sections; you are choosing what a human sees first on page one.
Parsers map labeled sections like Education and Experience into fields. They do not usually award extra points because Education sits higher on the page. What changes is skim speed: a recruiter who only reads the top third may never scroll to your internship bullets if a long unrelated job block sits above your new degree.
When a posting names a license or cert as a hard requirement, put a Certifications block directly under your summary or inside the top half of page one. Do not bury a CPA, RN license, or AWS cert under old retail jobs. Education can sit above experience, but gatekeeping credentials should be visible before either block when the req treats them as must-haves.
Only when the new degree or bootcamp is the bridge into the target field. If you are pivoting into data analytics and you just finished a relevant program, education above experience tells the story. If you already have two years of analyst titles, leading with those jobs is stronger even if your bachelor's is in another major.
Yes. Save a master file, then duplicate it per posting. One version can lead with experience for industry roles; another can lead with education for campus programs or fellowships. Keep filenames obvious so you do not upload the wrong order. After you reorder, run the file through a checker so headings still parse as plain text.
