Resume length guidelines that work: one page vs two for your next US application, the four-check test, and what to cut before you add a second page.

5 min read

You've got the posting open and a PDF that's either spilling onto page two or crammed into nine-point type on page one. Tonight you need a call, not a lecture about what recruiters supposedly prefer in theory.

One page if you're under eight years in your target field with two strong roles, or you're a career changer who can prove transfer skills without a history dump. Two pages if you've got three relevant employers in the last ten years and each one needs real bullets, not a single duty line.

Check your resume for free after you pick a page count. A two-page file that parses badly in Workday won't get read on either page.

Below: resume length guidelines that match how US recruiters actually skim files, a four-check test you can run in ten minutes, what makes page two backfire, and how to trim without deleting the proof that got you the interview.

Quick Wins

  • Default to one page unless three recent roles each need two bullets.
  • Delete old one-line jobs before you shrink font to 9 point.
  • Print the file: if page two opens first, trim page one proof.

One page is the default for most US corporate roles

Length rules on the internet love counting years. Hiring managers count proof. If your last two roles each carry two outcome bullets that match the posting, one page is usually enough even at seven years of experience.

Stay on one page when: you're applying to roles where your last two jobs tell the whole story, you're early-career with internships plus one full-time role, or you're switching fields and need every line to show transfer proof instead of old job titles.

Move to two pages when: you have three or more relevant employers in the last decade, you're director-level with board or advisory lines that matter, or you're in a technical track where patents, publications, or a speaking list belongs on the same export.

Parsers in Greenhouse and Lever do not score you down for two pages. Humans do score you down when page two is filler. That's the split most candidates miss.

And if you're still unsure, print the file and hand it to someone who'll tell you the truth in ten seconds. If they flip to page two before they finish page one, your first page isn't doing its job yet.

Four checks before you add page two tonight

Run these in order on the file you're about to upload. They take less time than rewriting bullets you'll cut tomorrow.

Check 1: Role count. Count relevant employers in the last ten years. Two or fewer with strong bullets usually means one page. Three or more with metrics each often means two.

Check 2: Bullet load. Open how many bullets per job and count yours. Recent role gets three to four. Older roles get one to two. If you're above that on jobs from eight years ago, trim before you add a page.

Check 3: Font honesty. Body text at 10.5 to 11 point Calibri or Arial, single column. If you're below 10.5 point to stay on one page, you're not on one page. You're hiding content.

Check 4: Page-two value. Read only page two out loud. Every line must add a skill or outcome not already on page one. If it doesn't, delete page two.

Copy-paste block: page count test

Run before you export PDF

Relevant employers (last 10 years): ___
Bullets on most recent role: ___
Body font size (point): ___
Page 2 adds NEW proof? Y / N

If employers ≤ 2 AND bullets ≤ 8 total → try ONE page
If employers ≥ 3 AND each needs 2+ metric bullets → TWO pages
If font under 10.5 point → CUT content, do not shrink type
If page 2 answer is N → ONE page only

Before: Two pages with a 2009 retail job, a skills box repeated on page two, and references available upon request.

After: One page with two recent roles at four bullets each, one Earlier Experience line for pre-2016 work, no references line.

Before: One page at 9.5 point with six jobs squeezed and margins at 0.4 inches.

After: Two pages at 11 point with the last three employers detailed and older roles collapsed to title, company, dates only.

I have screened two-page files in Greenhouse where page two was three one-line jobs from 2008, and the candidate would have looked stronger on one sharp page with the same recent proof up front.

Resume length guidelines for senior roles (and when they break)

Senior applicants get bad advice to always use two pages. Some should. Some are padding a thin second page because they think length signals importance.

Two pages works when you've led multiple teams across companies and each stint needs scope lines: headcount, budget, product surface, or revenue band described in the posting's language.

Two pages fails when page two is old management titles with no metrics, a duplicate skills section, or volunteer work unrelated to the role you're applying for tonight.

Directors and VPs still lose screens on bloated page two. The fix is usually cutting early-career detail, not adding a third summary paragraph. For trimming without losing proof, read how to shorten your resume without deleting important experience .

Before: VP resume, two pages, page two starts with a 2004 analyst role at four bullets.

After: VP resume, two pages, page one ends with director scope; page two opens with advisory board line and the one patent that matches the posting.

Trim the file, then verify the export

Page count decisions mean nothing if the upload garbles your dates. After you pick one or two pages, run the actual PDF through a parser check. A clean one-pager that loses employer names in Workday is worse than a two-pager that parses cleanly.

Run a free ATS check on the version you'll submit. If section headers scramble on page two, fix layout before you debate length again.

If you're rebuilding from a master file, build your resume in a single-column template first, then cut to one page or expand to two with the four-check test above.

If the posting asks for a letter, generate a cover letter in the same plain format as your trimmed resume export.

Make the one-page or two-page call now

You don't need a perfect rule for every career stage. You need a rule for this posting tonight. Count relevant roles, count bullets, check font size, and read page two alone. If it doesn't earn its space, cut it.

One sharp page beats two vague ones. Two proof-heavy pages beat one page crammed at nine-point type. Pick the version a tired recruiter can skim between meetings, export it, and upload.

Job searching is slow enough without reformatting the same file three times. Decide once, name the export by role family, and apply with a file you'd actually want someone to read aloud.

Frequently asked questions

Yes when page two carries new proof, not old job titles. If you have three relevant employers in the last ten years and each role needs two metric bullets, two pages is normal. If page two is one-line jobs from fifteen years ago, cut to one page and group early work in a single Earlier Experience line.

A one-page file is too short when it hides a role the posting requires. If the job asks for five years in RevOps and your only RevOps job is buried in a generic skills list, expand that role with two bullets. Empty white space is not the problem. Missing proof for a must-have requirement is.

No. Drop a role, shorten bullets, or move to two pages before you go below 10.5 point body text. Recruiters notice cramped type during a phone-screen skim. Parsers still read the file, but humans bail when they cannot scan bullet one without zooming.

For most US corporate roles, never. Academic CVs, federal applications with strict forms, and some medical credential packets are different document types. If you are applying through Workday or Greenhouse for a standard corporate role, two pages is the ceiling unless the employer explicitly asks for a CV.
