Put part-time jobs in your main Experience section with dates, hours per week, and proof bullets. US resume format recruiters and ATS parsers actually read.

Put part-time work in your main Experience section, not a side box. Use the same reverse-chronological format as full-time roles. Add Part-Time or your weekly hours in the title line or first bullet. Give each job an employer name, city, and Month Year dates. Write two to four bullets with outcomes, not task lists. That is how US recruiters and ATS parsers read part-time history without guessing whether you were employed.

You're not hiding a side gig because you're ashamed. You're worried it'll look small next to full-time titles or that parsers will drop it if you tuck it under Volunteering. Both fears are fixable with layout, not omission. If you've held two part-time roles at once, don't merge them. List each employer with dates and hours. Before you rearrange anything, check your resume for free and confirm part-time entries parse in the Experience block where you placed them.

Below: why part-time lines get misread, exceptions when you shorten or skip a role, and before-and-after examples for students, career changers, and professionals holding two jobs at once.

Quick Wins

  • Experience section, reverse chronological, same as full-time jobs.
  • Part-Time or hours per week in the title line once.
  • Employer name and Month Year dates on every entry.

Why part-time work disappears on US resumes

Candidates hide part-time roles in sidebars, label them Other, or list only the gig economy app name without dates. Parsers in Workday and Greenhouse attach those lines to the wrong field or skip them. Recruiters doing a ten-second skim see a gap where you were actually working twenty hours a week.

Part-time is not a lesser category on a US resume. It is employment with a lower weekly hour count. Background checks still verify employer and dates. The fix is honest labeling in the main Experience flow, not shrinking the role into a single line at the bottom.

Students, parents returning to work, and professionals bridging between full-time jobs often stack one part-time role with school or caregiving. Omitting the job creates timeline holes that hurt more than a Part-Time label helps.

I've screened files where the candidate hid retail part-time work in a Projects section and the ATS left Experience blank for those years. The fix was one moved block, not a rewrite of the whole career.

How to list part-time work on a resume: format rules

Rule 1: Same section, same order as full-time jobs

Place every paid role in Experience sorted by end date, most recent first. Do not create a Part-Time Work header unless you have no full-time history at all and need to group several small gigs for clarity.

Before: weekend barista job listed under Additional Information with no dates.
After: Barista (Part-Time) | Riverfront Coffee | Portland, OR | Jan 2024 to Present with bullet "Handled morning rush POS for 80+ orders; trained two new hires on closing procedures."

Rule 2: Label part-time once in the title line

Use Part-Time in parentheses after the job title or note 15 to 25 hrs per week if the posting cares about capacity. One label is enough.

Copy-paste title line block: "Job Title (Part-Time) | Employer Name | City, ST | Month Year to Month Year"

Rule 3: Two to four bullets with proof, not duties only

Part-time roles still need outcomes. Cash handling accuracy, customer volume, software used, or revenue supported all count. If the work is unrelated to your target role, keep one bullet and focus bullets on the relevant job.

Rule 4: Overlapping full-time and part-time is normal

List both jobs with real dates. Overlap is common for consultants, adjunct instructors, and freelancers. Do not merge them into one fictional employer.

Before: only full-time employer listed while contract work runs in parallel with no entry.
After: two Experience blocks with overlapping dates; contract role titled "Data Analyst (Contract, Part-Time)" with client name and project outcomes.

Students and recent grads

Put campus jobs and off-campus part-time work in Experience above coursework. Education section holds degree and graduation date. A part-time campus IT role with tickets closed and systems supported beats a long list of unrelated courses for your first full-time tech application.

Before: "Worked at dining services" in a single line under Education.
After: Dining Services Associate (Part-Time, 18 hrs per week) | State University | 2023 to 2025 with bullets on cash reconciliation, shift scheduling, and food-safety training compliance.

Career changers using part-time bridge roles

When part-time work is your proof of the new field, lead bullets with skills the posting wants. A part-time bookkeeping gig while you finish a certificate belongs in Experience with QuickBooks and reconciliation metrics, not buried under hobbies.

Read resume framing for career switchers when the part-time role is your main evidence of the pivot.

Freelance and gig work labeled honestly

Use Freelance or Independent Contractor in the title when you had multiple clients. List a representative client or the trade name you invoiced under. Do not invent a company name. Dates should span the period you actively took work.

Before: "Self-employed various projects" with no dates or client context.
After: UX Designer (Freelance, Part-Time) | Self-employed | Remote | Jun 2024 to Present with bullet "Delivered three Shopify redesigns for retail clients; raised mobile conversion 14% on average across projects."

When to shorten or omit part-time work

Omit roles from ten or more years ago if they add no skills and you have stronger entries for the same period. Shorten to one line plus one bullet when space is tight on a one-page resume and the job is unrelated. Never omit a current part-time job that overlaps your most recent full-time role; that overlap is what background checks compare.

Read how many bullet points per job on a resume when you're deciding how much space each part-time block deserves.

Adjunct, teaching, and tutoring roles

Adjunct faculty and tutors belong in Experience with Part-Time in the title. Bullets should name courses, student count, or outcomes graded, not only "taught classes." Corporate trainers doing part-time workshops list the client or program name.

Before: "Tutor" under Skills with no employer.
After: Math Tutor (Part-Time, 10 hrs per week) | University Learning Center | Sep 2023 to May 2025 with bullet "Tutored 12 undergraduates per term in calculus; raised average exam scores one letter grade for 70% of repeat clients."

Retail and service part-time while job searching

A part-time retail job during a search fills timeline gaps. One or two bullets on cash handling, customer volume, or schedule reliability are enough when your target role is in another field. Do not give retail four bullets while your relevant internship gets one.

Lead with the role that matches the posting. Part-time unrelated work still appears in Experience for honesty, but order and bullet depth follow relevance, not pride.

Gig apps and platform work

Driving, delivery, and task platforms count as employment when you did them steadily. Use the platform name as employer or "Self-employed via [Platform]" if you invoiced under your own name. Dates matter more than the app logo.

Before: "Uber" in hobbies.
After: Driver (Part-Time, Independent Contractor) | Uber | Jan 2024 to Aug 2024 with bullet "Completed 400+ trips with 4.9 rider rating; managed flexible schedule around full-time coursework."

Parenting gap vs part-time work

Part-time work during caregiving is employment, not a gap. List it with dates that overlap caregiving years so recruiters see continuous activity. A cover note can explain reduced hours without apologizing on the resume itself.

Formatting part-time on a two-page resume

Recent full-time roles get page one and most bullets. Older part-time roles move toward page two with one bullet each. If two part-time jobs sit in the same year, order by relevance to the posting, not by hours worked.

Single-column layout still applies. Part-time entries in a colored sidebar parse as volunteer work in some ATS tools. Keep title, employer, and dates on consecutive lines in the main column.

Explaining part-time in a cover note

The resume shows facts. The cover note can add one sentence on availability if the posting asks for full-time start soon. "I currently work 20 hours per week and can transition to full-time with two weeks notice" is cleaner than hiding the part-time label on the resume.

Seasonal and holiday part-time work

Seasonal retail and tax-season accounting jobs still get Month Year dates even when the stint lasted only ten weeks. Recruiters prefer a short labeled job over a mysterious winter gap. Title line can note Seasonal if the role was explicitly temporary.

Before: no entry for holiday warehouse work because it felt too short.
After: Warehouse Associate (Part-Time, Seasonal) | National Retailer | Nov 2024 to Jan 2025 with bullet "Picked and packed 120+ orders per shift during peak; zero safety write-ups across 12-week season."

Internship vs part-time employee

Paid internships go in Experience with Intern in the title when the program was structured. Part-time employee status uses Part-Time without Intern. Co-op programs should name the employer and term dates even when hours were below full time.

Recruiters treat steady co-op terms as early career experience, not gaps. Label the hours once and move on.

Where part-time entries break on US resumes

Hiding part-time work in a sidebar. Parsers read left to right. Sidebars dump dates into the wrong field.

No employer name. "Part-time retail" without a store name fails verification.

Vague date ranges. "2023" without months looks like a gap when HR compares to W-2 dates.

Calling part-time work an internship when it was not. Use the payroll title. Internship implies a defined program.

Stuffing every side gig on one line. Three unrelated employers in one bullet confuses both parsers and humans.

Assuming recruiters will ignore hours. Some reqs cap weekly availability. Label part-time once so nobody assumes 40 hours.

Inflating a part-time title. Call it what payroll called it. Background checks use the official title, not the resume headline you invented.

Listing part-time under volunteer when you were paid. Paid work belongs in Experience. Volunteer is unpaid community work only.

Check parsing before you apply

Move part-time roles into Experience, then upload to HireFlow's free ATS resume checker and confirm each employer and date range imported in the right order.

When a posting asks you to explain overlapping roles or part-time availability, draft a short note with the cover letter generator that states your weekly hours without apologizing for part-time status.

List part-time work where recruiters look first

How to list part-time work on a resume is straightforward on US format: main Experience section, honest Part-Time label, real employer names, Month Year dates, and bullets with proof. You're not downsizing the role. You're making sure parsers and recruiters see it.

Open your file tonight. Move any hidden part-time job into Experience. Add one label and two bullets. Run the checker. Apply with a timeline that matches what payroll already knows.

Screenshot the portal preview after upload. If a part-time employer lands under Projects or Volunteer, move the block and upload again. One parser pass saves a week of silence that has nothing to do with your skills.

Keep a master resume with every part-time role and a tailored version that shortens unrelated gigs for each posting. You are not deleting history. You are choosing depth per application.

  • Experience section, not sidebars.
  • Part-Time in the title line once.
  • Dates and employer on every entry.

Run the free resume check after you move part-time lines and confirm nothing landed in Skills or Projects by mistake.

Frequently asked questions

No for most US corporate applications. List part-time roles in Experience in reverse chronological order with other jobs. Label part-time in the title line or first bullet. A separate Other Experience section often parses below skills and gets skipped on a fast skim.

Include it when dates would otherwise look like a gap, when the role built transferable skills, or when you still hold the job. Omit long-ago unrelated part-time work if you have stronger full-time entries that fill the same years.

Add Part-Time or 20 hrs per week in parentheses after the job title or in bullet one. One mention is enough. Do not repeat hours on every bullet.

Only when they are the same function at different clients under one employer, such as a staffing agency. Do not merge unrelated side jobs into one block. Recruiters need employer names for background checks.
