How to explain school gap on a US resume: before and after lines
Pick the scenario closest to yours. Copy the after line, swap in your real Month Year dates, and stop. You do not need four versions on one file.
Leave of absence (academic or administrative)
Formal leaves are the easiest to label because the school already gave you language. Use their term when it is neutral: leave of absence, academic leave, or approved withdrawal with return date.

Family gaps are common and rarely need drama. Name the responsibility at a high level, not every medical detail of the person you supported.

If you coordinated appointments, managed schedules, or handled billing, one bullet under a short volunteer or caregiving line can show transferable skills. Keep it factual: Scheduled follow-up care and household logistics for a parent during medical treatment, Jan 2021 to Aug 2021.
Travel or gap year framed honestly
Travel is fine when you name structure. Language study, volunteer coordination, or budget planning all count. A passport stamp list does not.
Before: Gap year. Traveled.
After: Gap year, independent study abroad (Spanish language, volunteer coordination), Sep 2022 to May 2023. Listed under Education or Additional Experience with Month Year dates on one line.
Edge case: you worked paid jobs during the break. Put those in Experience with real titles and dates. The school gap line only covers months when you were not enrolled and not in paid work.
When you can skip a separate gap line
A summer off between spring and fall semesters does not need its own entry. Two or three months inside an expected academic calendar can stay inside one enrollment block if your transcript matches.
Anything that crosses a full term boundary or shows up as a zero-credit semester on a transcript needs a visible label. If you would need more than ten seconds to explain the dates aloud, put the line on paper.

Wording that still backfires after you add a line

Burying the gap inside a summary paragraph. Parsers attach summary text to the top of the file, not to education dates. Keep the label under the school name where Month Year rows live.
Writing personal reasons with no dates. Vague language without a range looks like you are hiding something worse than a leave.
