You're three years into brand or performance work, you've run paid social and email, and you're applying to marketing manager roles across London, Manchester, or remote UK hubs. The CV looked sharp in Canva. Then the portal asked for a PDF and nothing happened for weeks. That's often a parser problem, not a talent problem.
Check your resume for free on the exact file you'll attach. Mid-level marketing screens still start with software reading plain text order. If headings scramble, your CRM migration bullet might land under an internship from 2016.
UK recruiters still say CV while US teams say resume. The habits differ on length and tone, but Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, and iCIMS behave similarly: they want readable structure first. This page walks through layout, wording, and a copy-paste skeleton you can adapt without inventing campaigns you never ran.
Job searching is tiring when you're already doing day-job launches. You don't need a design award. You need a file that imports cleanly and still reads like a marketer who can explain CPL and pipeline on a phone screen.
If you're comparing file types across borders, skim the difference between a CV and a resume for naming and length norms, then come back here for marketing-specific bullets.
Quick Wins
- Rebuild in a single column before you tailor wording.
- Move phone and email out of Word headers into the body.
- Mirror three posting phrases inside current-role bullets, not a keyword block.
- Scan the same PDF or DOCX you will upload tonight.
What breaks on mid-level marketing CV imports
Parsers do not admire your colour palette. They read top to bottom and guess where sections start. When experience dates sit in a sidebar, the tool may attach Q3 paid search results to the wrong employer block.
The failure mode is order, not keyword density. A mid-level marketer can repeat SEO twelve times and still lose if the file is two columns with icons splitting bullets.
Human recruiters want a fast story: channel ownership, budget band, team shape, and proof you can read a dashboard without hand-holding. ATS gets you to that human only if the text arrives intact.
UK mid-level roles often sit between executive and specialist titles: marketing manager, campaign manager, growth lead, CRM manager. Titles vary, but screens look for lifecycle, acquisition, and brand work with numbers tied to platforms.
Agency backgrounds confuse parsers when client names appear as sub-headings without dates. Keep client work inside bullets under the agency employer row, with date ranges on the agency line only, unless the posting asks for a client list and you can share names.
In-house teams care about stack depth: HubSpot, Marketo, Braze, Salesforce, GA4, Looker. Name what you logged into weekly, not every tool the company owned.
European readers outside the UK can reuse the same structure; swap spelling and date format if the employer is EU-based, but keep one column for online applications.
For keyword ideas once structure is fixed, see marketing resume keywords that get interviews and borrow phrases only where your history supports them.
Five steps to build an ATS-friendly UK CV
Work in order. Tailoring words on a broken layout wastes an evening. Each step below ends with something you can tick off before the next apply session.
Step 1: Strip layout back to a single-column source file
Open a blank Word or Google Doc. Paste plain text from your old CV. Remove tables used for alignment, skill bars, and infographic timelines. Set margins to normal and keep section headings on their own lines.
Before: Two-column Canva export with icons for SEO, PPC, and email.
After: One column, left-aligned text, headings spelled Profile and Professional Experience.
Save DOCX as your master. When a portal accepts PDF, export from that master the same day you apply so you are not mixing sources.
Step 2: Match UK headings and contact placement
UK CVs often open with Profile rather than Summary. Use Key Skills or Core Skills for tools. List Professional Experience in reverse chronological order with Month Year dates: Jan 2022 to Present.
Put contact details immediately under your name in the body. Parsers sometimes skip header/footer contact blocks, which leaves recruiters with a name and no phone number after import.
Before: Phone number only in a Word footer.
After: Name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn URL as plain lines at the top.
Step 3: Rewrite marketing bullets with channel, tool, and metric
Each bullet should answer what channel, what system, and what changed. Numbers inside bullets are illustrations of your work history, not promises about every applicant's results.
I've screened mid-level marketing CVs in Greenhouse where the parser merged a sidebar skills column into the profile paragraph, and the hiring manager never saw the candidate's paid search totals.
Before: Drove multi-channel campaigns and improved brand awareness across stakeholders.
After: Ran Meta and Google paid social for a B2B SaaS trial funnel, cutting CPL from £42 to £31 over two quarters in Ads Manager.
Pair for CRM marketers: swap managed email campaigns for rebuilt onboarding journeys in Braze for freemium users, lifting activation on week-one feature events you tracked in Mixpanel.
Pair for content leads: swap oversaw content strategy for published eight SEO briefs per month in Contentful, earning three page-one rankings for product comparison terms in six months.

Step 4: Tailor the profile and top role to the posting
Highlight three repeated requirements from the job description. If the ad stresses ABM, marketing automation, and Salesforce, those words should appear in your profile or first bullets where true.
Do not paste the ad verbatim. Recruiters notice mirrored paragraphs. Change clause order and keep your own metrics.
Edge case: hybrid brand and performance roles. Split bullets by outcome type under one title instead of creating fake sub-jobs. One bullet on brand lift survey results, the next on paid efficiency, both under the same employer dates.
Edge case: fixed-term maternity cover contracts. Label the role clearly in the title line: Marketing Manager (12-month FTC). Parsers handle parentheses better than unexplained short dates.
Step 5: Export, scan, and rename the file you will upload
Export once per apply day. Open the PDF and scroll to confirm employers and dates survived. If a heading turned into gibberish characters, re-export from DOCX without special bullets.
Name files predictably: Firstname_Lastname_Marketing_CV.pdf. Recruiters download dozens; searchable names help humans even when ATS already stored the file.
Keep a short notes doc with posting URLs and which bullet variants you used. Tailoring is faster when you reuse your own sentences instead of rewriting from a blank page each time.
When a portal offers optional fields, paste a two-sentence profile there too if the box accepts plain text. Some systems use it as a secondary parse field.
Avoid uploading the same generic CV to twelve roles without changing the profile line. Parsers will not punish you, but humans notice when the profile still names a fintech employer while the ad is retail.
If you manage freelancers, credit team outcomes without claiming sole ownership. Marketing screens probe collaboration fast.
Certifications like Google Analytics or Meta Blueprint belong in Education or a short Certifications line. One line each is enough unless the posting demands a credential.
Volunteer campaign work counts when it used professional tools. Label it Volunteer Marketing Lead with dates so it does not merge into paid employment.
Remote UK roles still expect city or time zone in contact lines. Remote is not a blank location field for parsers mapping territory roles.
Salary history does not belong on the CV for most UK marketing applications. Keep that for recruiter conversations unless the form forces a number.
References on request is fine at the bottom. Do not burn space listing three names unless the employer asks early.
This will not fix applying three levels above your scope. It stops qualified mid-level marketers from disappearing because the file imported as noise.
Layout choices that waste good campaign stories
Design-first exports. Canva and similar tools produce pretty PDFs that parsers treat as shapes. Rebuild in Word even if you lose colour.
Keyword clouds at the bottom. A paragraph of comma-separated tools looks like stuffing and rarely maps to ranked fields. Put terms in bullets instead.
Before: Skills: SEO, SEM, CRO, CRM, CMS, PPC, KPI, ROI, B2B, B2C, SaaS, AI.
After: One bullet on SEO content cadence in Contentful, one on paid search structure in Google Ads, each with an outcome you can explain.
Tables for employment history. Rows and columns break when imported. Use employer title lines plus bullet lists underneath.
Graphics for proficiency. Star ratings and bar charts do not parse. Write Advanced HubSpot workflows or Basic SQL for reporting instead.
Listing every martech tool at the company. If you only viewed dashboards, say reported from Looker rather than owned Looker implementation.
Applying with a US resume template that uses Resume as the heading is not fatal, but UK hiring managers expect CV labelling in the file name and profile tone. Match the audience without breaking single-column rules.
Match the CV to the posting after formatting
Clean layout gets you read. Tailoring gets you shortlisted when fifty marketers share similar titles. Do both on the same evening, formatting first.
Paste the job description into score your job match and see whether your rebuilt bullets surface repeated tools and channels. Add terms only where your history is true.
Run the free ATS checker on the export you plan to attach. Fix heading order before you rewrite the profile again.
Do this now: Rebuild one column, update three bullets under your current role, export PDF, scan, then tailor the profile to one live posting.
Upload the boring file that tells the truth
Mid-level marketing hiring still runs through parsers and busy humans. An ATS-friendly UK CV is not a creative portfolio. It is a single-column story with standard headings, honest campaign metrics, and tools you can demo on a video call.
- Rebuild layout in Word or Docs before you tailor language.
- Keep contact details in the body, not hidden headers.
- Name channels, platforms, and outcomes in each bullet.
- Scan the same file you upload, then match the posting.
Run a free ATS check after your next export. Clean imports keep your campaign numbers attached to the right employer row.
Store one master CV and duplicate per sector tweak. Retail, fintech, and SaaS postings deserve different profile lines even when employment history stays the same. For the same application, generate a cover letter after the CV matches the posting so employers and dates stay aligned.
And when a recruiter asks about a metric on the page, answer with the same platform names you listed. Consistency beats buzzwords on a thirty-minute screen.
Job searching while you're still hitting month-end reports is brutal. One focused hour on structure plus three tailored bullets beats a whole Sunday redesigning fonts.
If a friend offers feedback, send the PDF export, not a Canva link. They cannot judge parser order from a share URL.
Celebrate small wins: one role block that imports cleanly is enough to apply tonight. Older agency roles can stay shorter until the next tailoring pass.
Keep the posting open while you edit so you do not drift into channels the req never mentioned. Tone plus wrong channel focus is still a mismatch.

Frequently asked questions
Two pages is normal once you have four to eight years of campaign work, provided the second page is not filler. Keep page one for profile, skills tied to tools, and your last two roles with metrics. Move older agency stints to short lines. If page two is mostly white space, tighten bullets instead of adding adjectives.
Upload what the form asks for. Many UK employers accept PDF, but some legacy parsers still prefer DOCX. Export a single-column file from Word or Google Docs, then save PDF from that same source. Do not upload a Canva export or a design PDF with text boxes. Run a parser check on the exact file you attach.
Photos are common on human-facing UK CVs, but they do not help parsers and can break layout on import. For online applications through Workday, Greenhouse, or Lever, skip the photo and keep contact details in the body, not in a header the parser ignores. You can keep a separate PDF with a photo for networking if a contact asks.
Put a short Skills block under Profile with tools you truly use: GA4, HubSpot, Meta Ads Manager, Salesforce. Repeat the same terms inside experience bullets with outcomes. A skills list alone rarely carries a screen; the bullet that names the channel and the result does. Avoid stuffing every platform you touched once.
