If you're applying to a fleet req tonight, you'll want to check your resume for free against the posting. A sharp layout that hides ASE T2 or your CDL class still dies in iCIMS while a weaker file with dated DOT bullets moves on.

They're not scoring your childhood wrench set. They can't find Cummins ISX when it lives inside a two-column skills sidebar. And you won't get a shop tour if the file never says Class 8.

So put certs, license class, and truck brands in bullets under real jobs. A parts counter packet is not a hiring resume. Neither is a photo resume with logos the parser skips.

Training paths shops actually hire from

Dealers, municipal fleets, oilfield services, and national carriers all run different bays. They share one filter on your file. Can a dispatcher see ASE credentials, equipment class, and recent heavy work without opening a paper folder?

The parser does not read your trade story. It looks for ASE, CDL, DOT, and OEM tokens tied to dates.

Paths into diesel work include high school CTE, community college diesel programs, manufacturer academies, union apprenticeships, dealer trainee lanes, and military motor transport. None of those paths matter on page two if page one reads like a retail job with Skills: diesel, hard worker, tools.

I've screened stacks of technician files in Workday and Greenhouse, and the diesel candidates who stall list ASE certifications in a cloud while every Experience bullet still describes oil changes on light cars.

Dense Skills sections are how qualified heavy-tech applicants disappear. A sidebar that lists Detroit, Paccar, and Cummins without a single dated role often parses as keyword stuffing. Lever then shows no employment history with trucks over 26,000 pounds GVWR.

Shop proof belongs in bullets under dated employers, not as adjectives. "Good with hydraulics" is a mood. "Replaced steering gear on 12 Class 8 day cabs, torqued pitman arm to OEM spec, cleared pull-test on alignment rack" is a hiring metric.

And the cert line matters. "ASE T2 Medium/Heavy Truck, expires March 2027" beats "ASE certified" with no series. Sourcers search T1 through T8, S-series, and CDL Class A. They do not infer them from a toolbox photo.

If you rotated through apprenticeships across two shops, date each leg. Don't merge three summers into one paragraph. Pair gaps with employment gap examples recruiters accept so training time reads as work, not unemployment.

This won't invent ASE cards you have not passed. It stops a qualified file from dying because Workday never mapped you to heavy diesel.

Confirm test series on your card before you type them. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence publishes which exams map to medium and heavy truck work. Type the series exactly as the card shows it.

Social Security numbers and full DMV account screenshots stay off the resume. Don't paste VIN lists from a carrier data export. One plain CDL line is enough for screening.

Edge case: You hold automotive A-series and are testing T-series. List passed tests only. Add "ASE T2 scheduled [Month Year]" only if true. Don't claim heavy certifications because you work near trucks.

Turn shop hours into equipment bullets

Hiring managers buy people who already turned wrenches on their fleet mix. A training summary without truck classes looks like light-line auto. A dated role with DOT language looks like day-one diesel.

Internships and co-ops belong as dated roles with supervisor context. Keep each to setting, Month Year range, and two proof bullets. Drop unrelated fast-food jobs unless you need to show continuous work.

Edge case: Posting wants roadside service experience. Add a bullet on mobile repairs, winch use, and safe lane placement. Don't list it only under Skills as breakdown.

Date trade programs like corporate jobs

Month Year on trade school, associate degree, and manufacturer academy completion. Workday date fields hate "2020-2022" inside a sentence. They want endpoints they can map.

Spell credentials. Associate of Applied Science in Diesel Technology, Certificate in Heavy Equipment. Acronyms can follow. Don't rely on "mechanic school" as a parser token.

OSHA 10, HAZMAT awareness, and employer safety cards can sit in Certifications with expiration. A fleet posting that mentions safety audits wants those tokens near the top, not on page two.

Tools lists do not replace work bullets. For shop roles, park scan tools you used in Experience: INSITE, JPRO, TEXA. Three dated bullets beat a dumped tool inventory with no employer.

Mirror the fleet the posting actually runs

Diesel on a req can mean over-the-road tractor, vocational refuse, ag equipment, or generator service. Mirror the posting's brands in bullet one. Then prove PM or diagnostic work in the next two bullets.

Copy-paste bullet skeleton (edit every bracket): "Diagnosed [system] on [engine family] using [scan tool], replaced [component], verified [test drive or pressure spec] on [truck class]."

Edge case: Union hall hiring hall rotation. List the hall and dispatched employers as separate dated lines if checks were W-2. Don't collapse six months of fleet work into "various contractors" with no dates.

Warranty and comeback language matters on dealer reqs. One bullet on documenting root cause, parts replaced, and test drive signoff tells the service manager you close loops, not just throw parts at codes.

Refrigeration and trailer work often sit on separate reqs. If you hold EPA Section 608 or trailer ABS experience, type it on a Certifications line and repeat it beside a reefer unit bullet so parsers tie credential to equipment.

Shop files that parse as lube tech

Two-column resumes with a photo header. Workday reads columns out of order and turns Cummins into a skill named 2019. One column. One reading order.

ASE listed without series or expiration. Parsers and fleet auditors treat vague cert claims as risk. Type the series and renewal month.

Every bullet about passenger cars. For a Class 8 req, that signals you're still in light line. Move car work down or cut it.

CDL hidden until the driving test. If the job includes road tests, put the class on line two. They will ask before keys change hands.

Skills boxes without scan tools in jobs. INSITE and JPRO only count when a dated role repeats them.

Master tech title on an apprentice file. You'll fail the practical even if a parser lets you through.

Carrier career sites sell culture. Your packet sells parseable proof. Upload the resume you'll submit and check your resume for free against the same req. Fix ASE tokens, CDL line, and equipment bullets first.

When the req mentions DOT or FMCSA, add one inspection bullet before you tweak fonts or colors. Use the job match score if you're choosing between fleet and dealer versions of the same experience. Two tools are enough.

Trade school, apprenticeships, and ASE tests still sit on your path. They don't get you screened unless series, CDL class, and heavy equipment proof parse in plain text on page one.

Write the header. Date every shop. Name engines in bullets. Match the fleet in the req. Then leave the hobby wrench photo off the PDF.
