Before you submit a lateral bid tonight, check your resume for free against the investigator posting. Don't trust a badge graphic header; parsers still read it as decoration, not certification.
They're not hiring your academy speech. They're hiring a record that shows you already did investigative work under policy.
So you'll type POST status, department, and unit like hiring facts. Case counts belong in bullets only when policy allows them on resumes.
You're not rewriting your whole career story tonight. You're fixing the header and dates so the bid system can place you in the qualified stack before oral boards.
Do these three things first

What background units scan first
Municipal detective bids, county investigator laterals, and state agency reqs share one filter: can we verify academy completion, peace officer status, and investigative time on paper?
The parser hunts POST, assignment, and date tokens before it reads your narrative.
Certification means POST basic or state academy graduated Month Year. Status means active peace officer with department named. Assignment means patrol, crimes unit, or detective bureau with Month Year ranges.

Confirm POST naming on your state's POST program site or equivalent before you abbreviate credentials. Type what the certificate actually says.
Federal investigator reqs add announcement numbers and specialized experience essays. Keep a municipal PDF and a federal version when you chase both lanes.
Lateral transfers need prior department, resignation type, and eligibility date on plain lines when the form asks. Do not hide a prior separation reason that background will surface anyway.
Civilian HR clerks often never wore a vest. They still score keywords from the posting. Type detective, investigator, case, interview, and warrant where your bullets earned them.
Specialized units matter on paper: gang, narcotics, financial crimes, juvenile, cold case task force. Name the unit and dates even when the posting only says detective. Investigators infer fit from assignment history.

Highlight three req phrases: homicide, financial crimes, interview and interrogation, digital forensics support. Place one in the first eight words of your top bullet.
Pair with Workday resume format that parses cleanly when the city careers site names Workday.
Training courses belong with Month Year: advanced interview, death investigation, bloodstain pattern, ICAC task force rotation. Repeat course names in bullets where you applied the skill on cases policy allows you to summarize.
Cover letter: cert plus one case type
Copy-paste skeleton: "Applying for [Detective / Investigator role]. POST cert [Month Year], [department] [years] service, current [unit]. Representative work: [one bullet matching posting case type]. Available [date]."

Read employment gap examples recruiters accept if you left a department between laterals. Date the gap with one honest line.
Month Year on every role. Undated police work parses like unemployment. Fix dates before you polish your personal history statement.

Pivot paths need honest prior titles and investigative tasks spelled out. Do not merge agencies into one fictional employer block.

Parse before the personal history statement
Upload your PDF and run the ATS check against the investigator posting. Fix POST and unit tokens before you spend another hour on the narrative essay.
If the bid wants a short letter, use the cover letter generator and mirror cert lines from the header.
Keep a plain-text backup of bullets when civil service portals strip PDF columns on upload.
Oral boards and background interviews come later. The ATS gate only sees whether your assignment history imported with dates and whether POST tokens appear as text.
Line up cert and unit tonight

Type the header. Date every assignment. Drop badge graphics that parsers skip. Save a federal variant if you are chasing USAJOBS and city portals the same week.
Name the file with your name and detective or officer role so background staff can match it to your applicant ID.
Run the checker again after you tailor the lead bullet to the posting case type. Small edits restore tokens parsers missed the first time. That pass is cheaper than missing a lateral list cutoff by one night.
Re-read minimum service years on the posting before you apply. Tenure gates fail before anyone opens your PDF.
If you rotated through internal detective tryouts, date the rotation and name the supervising detective. Temporary details count when policy lets you list them as experience.
Save one version for property crimes bids and another for persons crimes when your case history differs. Same POST header, different lead bullets. Label filenames so you do not upload the wrong variant to a civil service portal at midnight.
