Resume tips for recent college graduates: lead with internships and projects in Experience, mirror posting terms in bullet one, and keep a single-column PDF under two pages.

You didn't waste four years. You just buried the proof under a coursework wall and a skills tag cloud.

Most new grad files I open look fine in Word and fall apart in the portal preview. That's fixable tonight if you'll reorder sections instead of adding another adjective to the summary. You already did the actual hard part by earning your degree.

Check your resume for free after step four below. You'll see whether your internship imported with a title and dates or vanished into a sidebar.

If the posting asks for a short note, generate a cover letter once the same tools show up in Experience. You're not repeating fluff. You're keeping vocabulary aligned.

Quick Wins

  • Move your best internship above campus jobs with no metrics.
  • Put the posting's top tool in bullet one under that role.
  • Export PDF and read plain text before you upload again.

Why new grad resumes stall after the degree line

Campus career centers still hand out templates built for paper handouts. Corporate portals want linear text: employer, title, dates, bullets. When Education eats half the page and Skills repeats buzzwords, parsers attach tools to nothing searchable.

You are not underqualified. You're under-labeled. The same capstone that impressed a professor needs an employer row, even if the employer was your university lab.

Before: Skills lists Python, SQL, and Tableau with no dates. Greenhouse search on SQL under current roles returns blank because nothing in Experience repeats the word.

After: Python and SQL sit in a bullet under "Data Intern, City Utilities, June 2025 to August 2025." The filter your recruiter runs can finally tie the tool to a time range.

For how parsers read files before a human opens them, see how ATS evaluates entry-level candidates . This page stays on what to change on your draft tonight.

Hiring managers are not asking for a memoir. They want to know if you can do the first six months of the job with reasonable coaching. Your resume answers that question in dated bullets, not in a paragraph about passion.

If you held multiple short internships, stack them in reverse chronological order and keep two bullets each. Three lines per role is enough when every line names a tool or audience size. Long paragraphs signal you have not edited yet.

Remote internships still get city and state if the employer has a US payroll address. Fully remote roles can list "Remote" after the company name so background checks align with what HR expects on the form.

Resume tips for recent college graduates in six steps

Work top to bottom. Don't tweak fonts until Experience tells a coherent story.

Step 1: Lock a one-page spine (or a tight two)

Use one column, standard fonts, and consistent Month Year dates. If you're past one page, cut club lines before you shrink font to 9 point. Tiny type does not add experience. It hides it.

Step 2: Promote internships and co-ops to Experience

List company, official title, city, state, and start and end months. Write two bullets per role. Lead with scope: team size, tool, or audience, then outcome.

Before: "Summer marketing help" under Activities with no dates.

After: "Marketing Intern, Harbor Retail, May 2025 to August 2025" with bullets that name email platform and list growth you can defend in an interview.

Step 3: Mirror posting language in bullet one

Open the job description. Highlight three required nouns. Place the strongest one in the first eight words of your latest relevant bullet. Synonyms alone often miss exact filters.

If the req lists both Excel and Google Sheets, use the phrase that appears in the required line first. You can mention the other tool in bullet two when you honestly used both during an internship report cycle.

Avoid stuffing every synonym in one bullet. One clear line with the employer's vocabulary beats a run-on sentence that reads like you pasted the job description.

Step 4: Use a Projects block only for proof you cannot date elsewhere

Capstones, hackathons, and freelance gigs belong here with Month Year ranges. One line of context plus one outcome line beats a paragraph of features nobody asked for.

Step 5: Trim Education to what recruiters verify

School, degree, major, graduation month and year, GPA only if strong and requested. Relevant coursework belongs as one line or moves into a project bullet, not both.

Step 6: Export PDF and read plain text

Save, copy text into Notepad or preview in the portal. If employer names split across lines or bullets appear before your name, fix layout before you apply again.

Run the same check on mobile if you will apply from your phone. Some portals reorder sections when you upload from iOS. A desktop PDF that parses clean is still worth five minutes on the device you actually use at midnight.

I've screened stacks of new grad uploads in Workday where the internship looked great on PDF and imported as a single orphan line. The fix was never more adjectives. It was a dated employer row and one honest metric.

Copy-paste experience block you can adapt tonight:

Riverside Analytics · Data Intern · June 2025 to August 2025
• Built weekly SQL dashboards in Looker for 4 account managers, flagging churn risk accounts
• Documented ETL steps in Confluence so fall interns could rerun the pipeline without shadowing

Edge case: unpaid campus research still gets an employer row ("State University, Research Assistant") with honest dates. Edge case: gap semesters for study abroad go in Education or a one-line note, not hidden titles that clash with a background form later.

Part-time retail or food service still counts when it shows customer volume, cash handling, or schedule reliability. Give it one bullet, not half a page, unless the posting targets operations roles where that story is the point.

Leadership in clubs matters when you quantify it: budget managed, events run, or volunteers trained. Otherwise it belongs in one line under Activities or drops off entirely for corporate analyst or engineering reqs.

Before: Volunteer line reads "Member, Finance Club" with no scope.

After: "Treasurer, Finance Club, September 2024 to May 2025 · Managed $4,200 annual budget and reconciled dues for 38 members" sits under Activities with dates recruiters can scan.

When the posting stresses communication, tie it to a deliverable: slide deck presented to faculty, client demo, or support ticket volume handled during internship hours. Soft skills without objects read as empty labels in keyword search.

GPA lines belong only when the employer asks or your program is competitive and recent. If you omit it, do not leave a conspicuous hole. Move the line up under the degree and keep the block to four lines total.

Links to portfolios or GitHub go in the header once. Repeat them in every project bullet and you waste space that could carry another posting noun in Experience.

Traps that waste your degree line

  • Objective paragraphs that repeat the job title without proof.
  • Skills clouds with no tool tied to a dated bullet.
  • Campus jobs listed above internships that match the posting field.
  • Design templates with icons that plain text reads as gibberish.
  • Second pages filled with high school awards after sophomore year.

Fix order first, vocabulary second. Resume formatting errors that break ATS parsing covers layout traps that hit new grads hardest when career center templates use tables.

References and "available upon request" lines are dead weight. Recruiters assume they can ask later. Use the lines for another bullet that proves a posting skill instead.

Fancy color bars and photo headshots help on networking handouts and hurt in Workday uploads. Stick to black text on white unless the employer explicitly wants a creative portfolio format.

Parse check before you hit submit

Upload the same PDF you'll send to the employer. Confirm internship titles and dates imported. Search plain text for each required skill from the posting.

Knockout questions in the portal ask for graduation month, work authorization, and relocation. Answer them to match your resume Education block. A mismatch on graduation date is a fast reject even when bullets are strong.

Save a master DOCX with every internship and project, then trim a one-page version per application. You are not maintaining five conflicting truths. You are choosing which two roles face the camera for each req.

Run the ATS check against the live job description. Fix missing employer rows before you tweak wording again.

Build your resume in a single-column layout if your Word template keeps breaking on export.

Ship the boring version that parses

Resume tips for recent college graduates boil down to dated proof, not more personality on page one. Lead with internships and projects that mirror the posting, keep Education tight, and verify plain text before the next upload.

Job searching right after graduation is draining. A cleaner file will not fix a bad market overnight. It does stop qualified grads from losing screens because a parser never attached their best internship to a searchable row.

When you're ready to tailor bullets per role, read how to tailor your resume for each application without rewriting the whole file every night.

Frequently asked questions

Only when it proves a posting requirement you cannot show elsewhere. Move capstone labs and class projects into Experience or Projects with dates. A long coursework list on page one pushes paid work below the fold.

One page is the default when you have under about three years of combined internships and jobs. A tight second page is fine for multiple co-ops or research roles if every line ties to the target field. Padding with clubs does not help.

Use three lines max if the posting names a niche stack. Otherwise lead with Education plus your strongest internship block. Empty summary fluff reads like you had nothing concrete to say.

Pair them with proof in a bullet. Communication belongs next to a presentation count or stakeholder list, not alone in Skills. Filters weight dated Experience lines higher than tag clouds.
