Where to put remote, hybrid, or onsite work preference on your resume, before/after lines by role, and three copy-paste versions. Run a free ATS check before you apply.

You've got the skills. The posting says hybrid three days in Atlanta. Your resume doesn't mention work model anywhere, or it says flexible in a footer the parser skipped. The recruiter assumes you're onsite-only, or remote-only, or simply didn't read the ad. Nobody wins that guessing game.

Work-model preference is a filter, not a personality test. Remote-only candidates get screened out of plant-floor roles on purpose. Onsite-ready people sometimes never surface for distributed reqs because the file never said so. One honest line near your contact info fixes most of that. Check your resume for free with the posting pasted in before you upload again.

Below you'll see what strong preference lines look like after a teardown pass: the bar they're judged against, before/after pairs across software, operations, healthcare, and field roles, what weak versions share, and three copy-paste lines by work model. Job searching while you're already stretched is hard. This page is about placement and wording you can fix in ten minutes.

Quick Wins

  • Put one preference sentence directly under your phone and email, plain text.
  • Replace flexible with a radius, time zone overlap, or onsite days per week.
  • Paste your PDF into Notepad. If the line appears after Education, move it up.
  • Match the posting work model when your real availability fits. Do not bluff hybrid to pass a filter.

Remote hybrid onsite work preferences resume: the bar your line must clear

Most advice tells you to stay vague so you do not scare anyone off. Recruiters in Workday, Greenhouse, and Lever read location and work-model fields on the req first, then ctrl-f your file for remote, hybrid, or onsite before they open bullet one. A missing line is a guess. A footer line is often invisible. A contradictory line costs trust.

The standard your file is scored against: one sentence, plain text, visible in the first screen without scrolling, naming the work model you will accept, plus one boundary recruiters can verify: time zone overlap, driving radius, onsite days per week, or travel percentage.

Placement matters as much as wording. Header block under contact info is the default. Last sentence of a three-line summary works when you keep the summary factual. Footer-only, sidebar badge, or icon row fails twice: parsers often drop footers and sidebars, and humans skimming in six seconds never scroll there.

A composite mid-level analyst whose file still says flexible with work arrangements in a gray text box loses to a line that reads remote-first; US Eastern time overlap 9am to 5pm. Same person. Different filter outcome on a distributed req.

I've screened stacks of these in Workday and Greenhouse. The file that wins states the model plainly and puts it where both the parser and a tired coordinator can see it in one pass.

Read why your resume never reaches a human when your preference line is correct but the rest of the file still parses wrong. This page fixes the work-model sentence only.

Before/after pairs across roles and work models

Each pair below fixes the same failure mode: vague flexibility, wrong placement, or a line that contradicts the posting. Swap the role label. Keep the structure.

Pair 1: Remote software engineer

Posting: fully remote, US time zones, quarterly onsite summits optional.

Before: Remote OK badge in sidebar. No text in header. Summary ends with open to various arrangements.
After: Header line under email: Remote-first software engineer; US Eastern time overlap 9am to 5pm; available for up to four onsite team weeks per year.

Pair 2: Hybrid operations manager

Posting: hybrid, three days onsite in Dallas metro, supply chain leadership.

Before: Work preference buried in footer: willing to commute as needed.
After: Header line: Open to hybrid within 35 miles of Dallas; onsite Tuesday through Thursday; US Central time overlap 8am to 4pm.

Pair 3: Onsite manufacturing supervisor

Posting: 100% onsite plant supervisor, occasional travel to sister facilities.

Before: No work-model line. Recruiter assumes candidate might want remote after pandemic-era roles on the same resume.
After: Header line: Available for 100% onsite manufacturing supervisor roles in Greater Cleveland; passport current; up to 15% travel for plant audits and quarterly leadership meetings.

Pair 4: Customer success manager, remote or hybrid

Posting: remote US or hybrid two days in Denver hub.

Before: Flexible schedule in summary. Online profile says open to remote. Resume silent.
After: Header line: Open to hybrid within 25 miles of Denver (onsite Tuesday and Wednesday) or fully remote with US Mountain time overlap 9am to 5pm.

Pair 5: Registered nurse, onsite clinical

Posting: onsite med-surg, rotating twelve-hour shifts, no remote option.

Before: Seeking fulfilling opportunities in healthcare at top of summary. No shift or onsite clarity.
After: Header line: Available for onsite RN roles; open to twelve-hour day or night rotations within 40 miles of Columbus, OH; current BLS and ACLS.

Pair 6: Data analyst, distributed team

Posting: remote, must overlap UK afternoon for stakeholder reporting.

Before: Available anytime in Skills cloud with Tableau and SQL.
After: Header line: Remote data analyst based in US Eastern time; daily overlap 12pm to 4pm ET with UK stakeholders; no relocation.

Header placement before/after

Before: Name and contact on line one. Work preference only inside a Canva icon row at the bottom of page two.
After: Name, phone, email, city and state on line one. Work preference as line two in 11-point Calibri, same column, no box border.

Summary placement before/after

Before: Three-line summary about collaboration and results. Work model never mentioned.
After: Line one: role and years. Line two: top metric from current job. Line three: Remote-first product manager; US Pacific overlap 9am to 5pm; open to two quarterly onsite weeks.

Copy-paste block: three lines by work model

Copy-paste preference lines (edit the brackets)

Remote: Remote-first [title]; [your time zone] overlap [hours]; [travel or onsite weeks per year if true].

Hybrid: Open to hybrid within [miles] of [city]; onsite [days per week]; [time zone] overlap [hours].

Onsite: Available for 100% onsite [title] roles in [metro or radius]; [travel percentage if true]; [license or credential if posting requires it].

Filled remote example: Remote-first backend engineer; US Central overlap 8am to 4pm; available for two onsite sprint weeks per year.

Filled hybrid example: Open to hybrid within 30 miles of Seattle; onsite Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday; Pacific overlap 9am to 5pm.

Filled onsite example: Available for 100% onsite warehouse operations manager roles in Greater Phoenix; up to 10% travel for regional hub visits.

Edge case: relocating but not yet local

You will move for the right onsite role but are not in the metro yet. Say so with a date boundary instead of hiding behind flexible.

Before: Willing to relocate (no timeline).
After: Relocating to Austin, TX by September 2026; available for onsite roles with start date on or after relocation; remote until move date with Central time overlap.

Edge case: caregiver schedule needs bounded hours

Keep childcare and caregiving details off the resume. State the hours you can work as overlap windows, not personal reasons.

Before: Need flexible hours due to family responsibilities.
After: Remote-first; core availability US Eastern 8:30am to 3:30pm; occasional evening syncs with 24-hour notice.

Edge case: posting contradicts your real limit

The ad says hybrid five days. You can do two. Do not apply with a line that bluffs full hybrid. Either pass the req or state your true cap and let the recruiter decide early.

Before: Open to hybrid (no day count) on a resume sent to a five-day onsite hybrid req.
After: Skip the application, or write: Available onsite up to two days per week within 20 miles of Boston; otherwise remote-only with Eastern overlap.

Read cover letter mistakes that reduce interview chances when the portal asks for a letter. Repeat the same work-model sentence from your header. Do not introduce a third arrangement the resume does not support.

What weak work preference lines still share

Flexible with no boundary. Flexible tells a recruiter you have not decided. Name the model, the miles, the days, or the hours.

Footer or sidebar placement. Parsers drop footers. Humans skim the top third. If Notepad paste shows your line after Education, it is in the wrong place.

Icon badges instead of text. A small remote icon in a two-column template is not searchable text in Greenhouse or Lever keyword filters.

Contradicting the posting. Hybrid-friendly on a remote-only req reads like you did not read the ad. Match when you match. Pass when you do not.

Mixing signals across platforms. Resume says onsite-ready. Profile headline says remote-only. Recruiters compare tabs. Pick one true default per application wave.

Return-to-office opinions on the page. State availability neutrally. Save policy debates for a live call once you want the job.

Childcare or health details in the preference line. Boundaries yes, personal narrative no. Hours and overlap are enough for the resume stage.

Verify placement before the portal parses you

After you paste a preference line, upload the same DOCX or PDF plus the job description to HireFlow's free ATS resume checker . You will see whether the line landed in body text the parser can read or disappeared inside a layout element.

When the application asks for a cover letter, use the free cover letter generator with the same posting. Repeat the header preference sentence verbatim in paragraph one. Do not add relocation willingness the resume does not claim.

Do this now: Add your one-line preference under contact info, paste the PDF into Notepad, and run a free ATS check before tonight's apply.

Paste your line, then apply once

A remote hybrid onsite work preferences resume line works when it is honest, specific, and visible in the first screen. One sentence under your contact info beats a footer badge every time.

Open the posting tonight. Name the work model you will accept. Add the boundary: miles, days, hours, or travel. Paste into Notepad to confirm placement. Run a free ATS check before you upload. This will not fix applying to onsite plant roles when you are remote-only. It does stop qualified files from losing screens because nobody could tell what you would actually accept.

And if you are flexible between two real options, say both with numbers. Hybrid within thirty miles plus remote with time zone overlap is a filter recruiters can use. Flexible is a filter they cannot.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, when the line says remote-only and the posting requires two days onsite. That is the point. A vague flexible line gets you past the parser and into a recruiter call where both sides discover a mismatch on day three. State the arrangement you will accept, not every arrangement you might tolerate under pressure.

Mirror the posting when your real availability matches. If the ad says hybrid three days in Chicago and you live in Milwaukee with Tuesday-to-Thursday onsite capacity, say that. If you are remote-only, do not write hybrid-friendly to sneak past a filter. Recruiters compare your line to the req location field before they open bullet one.

Directly under your name and contact block, or as the last sentence of a three-line summary. Never only in a footer, sidebar icon row, or text box the parser reads after Education. Paste your PDF into Notepad. If the preference line appears after your degree dates, move it up.

Yes when both are true and bounded. Open to hybrid within 30 miles of Denver; also available fully remote with US Mountain time overlap reads honest. Flexible with work arrangements reads like you have not decided and forces the recruiter to guess.

Adjust when the posting changes the work model or location radius. Keep one master DOCX with your true default. Fork a version when the ad shifts from remote-US to hybrid-Boston. Upload the file that matches what you will actually accept, not the file that matches every keyword in the portal.
