Opening 3: generic employer praise
Before: “Your company is a leader in the industry and I have always admired your innovative culture.”
After: “I am applying to the grid modernization program at TenneT because your published 2030 offshore integration roadmap aligns with the thesis work I completed on HVDC scheduling at TU Delft.”
Opening 4: career change with no bridge
Before: “After ten years in teaching I am excited to move into corporate training and bring my passion for learning.”
After: “I am moving from secondary science teaching into instructional design; I built four SCORM modules for my district's LMS migration in 2025, which maps to your Junior Learning Designer posting.”

Upload and format rules for European portals
Filename discipline. Use Firstname_Lastname_Motivation_Letter.pdf unless the portal specifies otherwise. Match the CV filename pattern so HR pairs them in the folder view.
Layout. Single column, 11-point Arial or Calibri, one-inch margins. No headers with logos. Selectable text PDF beats a scan.
Language. Write in the language the posting uses. If the ad is bilingual, English is usually safe for multinational employers; local SMEs may expect Dutch, German, or French. Do not machine-translate without a human pass.
Photo and personal data. Some EU CVs still carry a photo line; the motivation letter should not add another headshot. Keep address detail minimal unless the country norm expects it on the letter header.
