LinkedIn profile checklist for US new grads: target-role headline, projects in Experience not About, skills that match postings, and resume alignment before you apply.

10 min read

Your resume is ready but recruiters still bounce off your profile in ten seconds. That's usually not a photo problem. New grad profiles fail when the headline repeats your major instead of your target role, and when the Experience section is empty while every capstone bullet lives in About. Recruiters don't read About first. They scan headline, most recent Experience line, and Skills. If those three don't match the PDF you uploaded to Greenhouse, they move on.

Check your resume for free with a posting pasted in after you finish this checklist. LinkedIn and the upload file should tell the same story with different depth. This linkedin profile checklist for US new grads runs before your first batch of applications, not after you've sent fifty Easy Applies with a blank Experience section.

You've probably copied your resume into About and called the profile done. Job searching as a new grad is already noisy without a profile that hides your best proof. Below you'll get six steps, headline and Experience before/after pairs, two edge cases for visa lines and career fairs, where new grads waste time on endorsements, and a copy-paste headline formula you can fill in tonight.

Open your profile and your resume PDF side by side. If the job title in your headline does not appear as the first line under your most recent Experience entry, start at step one. Don't apply until they match.

Why new grad LinkedIn profiles fail recruiter scans

Campus career centers often teach LinkedIn like a digital resume dump. Recruiters on US corporate teams scan differently. They search People for Junior Product Analyst or Entry-Level Financial Analyst, open your profile, and compare the top Experience block to the file in their ATS queue. Empty Experience with a novel in About does not survive that ten-second compare.

Headline is your search hook. Experience is your proof. About is optional narrative. When headline says Computer Science Student at State University and Experience lists only a barista job from sophomore year, recruiters cannot connect you to the data analyst reqs they're filling. They assume you're not serious about the lane and close the tab.

Edge case: international new grad on OPT. You do not need visa detail in headline. One factual line in About or the application form is enough when the posting asks. Lead with target role and tools so recruiters find you in search before they read sponsorship notes.

Edge case: no internship, only class projects. Title the Experience entry Capstone Project or Course Project with your university name as the organization field and three bullets with tools and outcomes. Empty Experience is worse than honestly labeled academic work.

Read new grad resume projects what to include when your LinkedIn Experience and your PDF need the same project bullets written for parsers.

Quick Wins

  • Headline: [Target entry-level title] | [one tool or domain] | [open to full-time US roles].
  • Move every capstone and internship bullet from About into Experience with dates.
  • Pin ten skills copied from three target postings, same order as resume Skills section.
  • Custom URL: linkedin.com/in/firstlast before you paste the link on your resume.

LinkedIn profile checklist for US new grads: six steps

Step 1: Rewrite headline with target role, not major

Open three entry-level postings in your lane. Copy the exact title string from each. Pick the one that fits most reqs you will apply to this month. That string goes first in your headline, before your school name or major.

Before: Economics Major at University of Texas | Class of 2026
After: Junior Financial Analyst | Excel and SQL | Seeking full-time roles in Dallas

Recruiters Boolean-search title terms. They do not search for your degree name unless the role is explicitly campus recruiting with a major filter, and even then headline should still say the job function you want.

Step 2: Move projects and internships into Experience

For each internship, part-time role, capstone, or club project with real output, add an Experience entry. Use honest titles: Marketing Intern, Software Engineering Capstone, Volunteer Web Developer. Add Month Year start and end dates. Write three bullets with tool plus scope plus outcome, same as resume rules.

Before: About section lists four projects in one paragraph. Experience shows only campus dining job from 2023.
After: Experience includes Capstone Data Pipeline Project with bullets on Python, 12K rows cleaned, dashboard delivered to nonprofit client.

Step 3: Complete Education and custom URL

Education should show degree, major, graduation month and year, and honors only if they are strong. Do not list every course. Add relevant coursework as one line if the posting asks for a specific methods class.

Edit your public profile URL to firstname-lastname or firstnamelastname. Put that URL on your resume contact line the same day. Recruiters click from PDF to profile. A string of random numbers looks like you have not finished basic setup.

Step 4: Pin skills from postings, not a generic list

Highlight ten skills that repeat across your target reqs. Put the three tools from resume bullet one at the top. Drop skills you cannot prove in an Experience bullet. Team player without a teamwork bullet in Experience is noise.

Endorsements from classmates do not replace proof. Recruiters scroll past fifty endorsed Excel profiles daily. They stop when Experience shows a model you built, not when fifteen peers tapped a button.

Step 5: Trim About to three short paragraphs

Paragraph one: target role and domain in two sentences. Paragraph two: one proof line pointing to your strongest Experience entry. Paragraph three: geography and start date availability. Move every metric out of About and into Experience bullets where search and resume compare happen.

Copy-paste headline formula for new grads:

[Entry-level title from posting] | [Tool, stack, or domain] | [City metro or Remote US] | Open to full-time

Step 6: Match resume PDF before first apply

Job titles and dates on LinkedIn must match your upload file. Bullet one on the resume should use the same tool names as headline and Skills. Mismatch is a common new grad rejection reason on coordinator screens before a hiring manager ever sees you.

Enable recruiter-only Open to Work after steps one through six, with two to three exact entry-level titles from postings. Do not toggle visibility before headline and Experience are fixed or you will get InMail for roles your profile cannot support.

Photo check: shoulders up, neutral wall, no sunglasses, no wedding or party crop. Banner image is optional for new grads. Recruiters rarely notice it on phone screens. Spend the banner minute on Experience bullet two instead.

Featured section can hold one portfolio link or GitHub repo if you are in tech or design. Skip Featured if the link is broken or still says Under construction. One live project beats three stale links recruiters will not click during a career fair line.

Activity feed matters less than structure for your first US apply batch. One comment on a company post after you apply is fine. Do not spend a week building content before headline and Experience are done. Proof beats posting frequency at entry level.

Read new grad resume mistakes that kill callbacks when your PDF still needs the same title strings you just placed on LinkedIn.

Where new grad profiles still break after setup

Before: Headline says Seeking opportunities. Experience empty. After: Headline names Junior UX Designer. Experience holds internship with Figma prototype bullet.

Before: Resume says May 2026 graduation. LinkedIn Education says 2025. After: Same month and year on both surfaces before any apply.

Before: Thirty skills endorsed, zero project bullets. After: Ten skills max, each backed by an Experience line a recruiter can read in five seconds.

Before: Apply to twenty reqs before profile URL is on the resume. After: Custom URL on contact block, then batch apply with tailored bullet one per posting.

Career fair season mistake: you hand a recruiter a resume with a LinkedIn link that still shows default headline from freshman year. Update headline the morning of the fair, not the week after follow-up emails go cold.

I've screened new grad stacks in Workday where the LinkedIn click showed a stronger story than the upload. Coordinators flag inconsistency and pass. Pick one source of truth, usually the tailored PDF, and align the profile to it before you send.

Do not post political or party content on a profile you link on finance or healthcare resumes. Recruiters are not scoring your views. Hiring managers notice when public posts conflict with client-facing roles.

Recommendations are nice at three, not required at ten. Ask one internship supervisor for a short note naming a project. Spend the rest of your hour fixing Experience bullets instead of chasing peer endorsements.

GPA in headline is optional. List GPA in Education only when it is strong for your field and the posting does not say omit. Headline space is for job function, not transcript detail recruiters can read one click down.

Match the upload before you hit apply

Paste your target posting into the free ATS checker and confirm title terms from your new headline appear in parsed Experience on the PDF, not only on LinkedIn.

When the portal asks for a letter, generate a cover letter using the same capstone metric from step two so LinkedIn, resume, and letter describe one project with one number.

Finish this linkedin profile checklist for US new grads tonight

New grads lose callbacks when headline repeats major instead of target role and when projects sit in About while Experience looks empty. Six steps fix the scan path recruiters actually use: headline, Experience, Skills, Education, URL, then resume match. You do not need a perfect profile. You need a consistent one before the first Greenhouse upload.

Rewrite headline. Move projects. Pin skills. Paste URL on your resume. Run one parse check. Then apply to three reqs with tailored bullet one, not thirty with a generic file. Job searching is slow enough without a profile that hides your best proof.

Save the headline formula in your notes. Reuse it for each lane you target this semester. One hour on LinkedIn before apply week beats a month of silence after recruiters clicked away from an empty Experience section.

Frequently asked questions

Lead with the target job title from postings you are applying to, then one stack or domain term. Major belongs in Education, not headline line one. Recruiters search for Junior Data Analyst, not Bachelor of Science in Economics. If your headline repeats your degree, you blend into thousands of new grads with the same major string.

Experience section with role titles, dates, and three bullets each. Do not bury projects only in About. About is for a short narrative. Experience is searchable and matches how recruiters compare your profile to your resume PDF after you apply through Workday or Greenhouse.

Yes for most corporate roles. Use a clear headshot, neutral background, shoulders up. No filters, no group crops. Profiles without photos get skipped in quick scans because recruiters cannot confirm you are a real candidate before they open the resume link.

Pin your top ten skills that appear in job descriptions for your target role. Order matters: put the three tools from bullet one on your resume at the top. Random soft-skill lists without proof bullets in Experience do not help recruiter search or human screens.

Yes, recruiter-only mode is fine for new grads who are actively applying. Narrow job titles to the exact entry-level strings on postings. Open to Work does not replace a complete Experience section or a tailored resume upload. Fix headline and projects first, then toggle visibility.
