How to optimize your CV for Lever ATS in UK finance roles: six steps
Work top to bottom. Do not tweak fonts until the plain-text export reads in the right order. Each step below maps to one failure mode I've seen on Lever imports for UK finance applicants.
Step 1: Run a plain-text export test
Open your CV in Word or Google Docs. Select all, copy, paste into Notepad or a blank document with formatting cleared. Read top to bottom as if you have never seen the layout.
Before: Sidebar contact block appears above your current role; ACA line sits between two jobs; bullet symbols became question marks.
After: Name and contact, then Work Experience with employers in reverse chronological order, then Education, then Skills. Every bullet is a plain hyphen or dot.
If paste breaks, rebuild as one column before Step 2. Two-column templates are the top Lever killer for UK finance CVs.
Step 2: Standardise section headers
Lever maps common labels to profile fields. Creative headings stall the import.
Before: Career Journey, Academic Background, Core Competencies.

Keep Professional Summary only if it is two lines max and sits above Work Experience. Long summary blocks sometimes parse as a mystery job. If your summary repeats bullet one, cut it and put the proof in Experience.
Step 3: Fix UK date format on every role
Use Month Year consistently. Put dates on the same visual line as the employer or directly under the job title in a single column.
Before: 15/03/2021 to present in a right-hand table cell.
After: Mar 2021 to Present on the line below Financial Analyst, Barclays.
Edge case: you held two contracts at one bank with overlapping dates. Split into two employer blocks with clear titles rather than one line with a slash. Lever attaches one date range per block.
Edge case: you are ACA qualified partway through a role. Put qualification year in Education, not inside the employment date range. Mixing exam passes into job dates confuses both Lever and human readers.
Step 4: Place ACA, ACCA, and CIMA where Lever expects them
Before: ACA alone in a Skills tag cloud; degree line says BSc Economics with no credential mention.
After: Education line: BSc Economics, University of Manchester, 2018; Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA), ICAEW, 2022. Bullet one under current role: Led month-end close for three legal entities under IFRS; ACA-qualified management reporting to UK board.
Spell out the credential once. Abbreviations in bullets are fine when the posting uses them. Do not list ACA, ACCA, and CIMA together unless you hold all three.
Step 5: Move posting keywords into experience bullets
Open the job description. Circle three must-haves: a reporting standard, a system, a scope signal. Each gets one dated bullet under the employer where you used it.
Before: Skills lists IFRS, consolidation, Hyperion, variance analysis with no dated proof.
After: Owned group consolidation in Oracle Hyperion for £420M revenue unit; cut reporting cycle from 9 to 6 working days in FY2024.
Copy-paste bullet skeleton: "[Verb] [scope] using [tool or standard]; [metric or outcome] in [timeframe]." Example: "Prepared board packs for UK-listed subsidiary under IFRS 16; reduced audit queries on leases from 14 to 4 in 2024 year-end."
Step 6: Export and upload a plain single-column PDF
Save as PDF from Word or Docs, not from a design tool. Click and drag across a paragraph in the PDF viewer. If text does not highlight, Lever will not read it either.
Before: Canva export with text baked into shapes; file size 4MB with background graphics.
After: Word export, Arial or Calibri 11pt, white background, under 500KB, text selects cleanly.
Upload the same file you tested. Renaming a fixed PDF while uploading an old version is a common last-step mistake. Keep one folder with the date in the filename: Surname_CV_Lever_2026-09-09.pdf.
After upload, open your application confirmation email and note the timestamp. If you discover a parse error later, you will re-upload the same corrected file rather than editing a different version from your downloads folder.
For contract or temp roles, list the end client in the employer line if the agency name would confuse the import. Lever recruiters search employer names; Agency X via Big Bank often parses with the agency on top and the bank missing.
Where Lever imports go wrong on UK finance files
These patterns show up on files that looked fine in Word. Fix them in order: layout first, then headers, then dates, then credentials, then keywords. Skipping straight to keyword edits on a two-column file wastes an hour.
Tables for employment history. Left column company, right column dates. Lever often reads across the row and merges fields.
Icons instead of words. Excel, Power BI, or Bloomberg icons do not import as keywords. Write the product name in text.
Headers and footers with contact details. Lever may duplicate your phone number three times and drop your email from the body.
Keyword clouds without dates. A Skills section that outruns Experience is a red flag in Lever search and in human review.
Scanned paper CVs. Some candidates still upload a scan of a signed printout. Lever sees an image, not text.

Hyperlinks in the contact block. LinkedIn URLs sometimes paste as blue underlined fields that break on export. Type the plain URL or drop the link and keep the handle text only.
Bullet symbols from template packs. Fancy arrows and checkmarks often become empty boxes in plain text. Replace with a standard hyphen before you run Step 1 again.
Listing every module you passed for ACA. Education needs the qualification line, not twelve exam names. Recruiters want ACA qualified with year, not a transcript in the CV body.
Test the file before Lever sees it
Run your finished PDF through a free ATS check with the job description pasted in. You are confirming parse order and whether must-have terms appear in dated lines, not chasing a perfect score.
Compare the checker output to your Notepad paste from Step 1. If employer order matches in both places, Lever will likely import the same sequence. If the checker flags a missing keyword that only lives in Skills, move it into bullet two under the employer where you used it in production.
When the posting asks for a short cover note, generate a cover letter that names the same IFRS or consolidation win from bullet one. The letter and CV should tell one story.
Keep a screenshot of the parsed view beside your final PDF. When a recruiter emails about a missing qualification, you can point to the Education line that Lever dropped and resend a corrected upload the same day.
Upload the boring file
