Out-of-state apps die in the location filter when the header city mismatches. Fix the contact line and Workday fields, then check your resume for free.

You're applying from Tampa to a Chicago req and the inbox stays empty. It's not that your bullets are weak. You've rewritten the summary twice. You haven't checked whether the portal preview imported your city into the location field. That's where out-of-state files die.

Most advice on how to get a job in another state tells you to sound eager in a paragraph. The packet never reaches a human who would read that paragraph. Before you write another essay, check your resume for free and confirm the header city parses as contact data, not as a buried clause under Experience.

Job searching across a state line is already hard. You're not lazy for getting silence. Corporate recruiters in Workday and Greenhouse often run a metro screen before they open the PDF. A relocation sentence buried in the summary is easy to miss once that screen is on. The contact line and the portal city fields are what you can control tonight.

Tonight, before the next apply

  • Keep your real current city on the header. Add the req city as a relocation note on that same line.
  • Match the portal current-city field to the header. Answer Yes on willing to relocate when you mean it.
  • Do not list the req city as your present address.
  • Use a cover letter for move timing only, never as the only relocation signal.

The symptom is a missing queue, not a missing skill

The tell is specific. You match the must-haves. You tailor bullet one. You even write a relocation paragraph. The portal shows Submitted. Then nothing. No view, no reject, no screen. That pattern is usually geographic plumbing, not a verdict on your career.

Out-of-state applications fail in the location filter and the contact line first. Recruiters running a Chicago onsite req set a metro, state, or radius. The short list is whoever imported into that fence. A Tampa header with no machine-readable move signal never enters the list. Your eagerness in paragraph three of the summary is not a location field.

Cover letters and LinkedIn About essays help after a human has the file. They do not rescue a candidate the filter already dropped. If you need header phrasing and a LinkedIn sentence, use the relocate playbook linked at the bottom. This page is the application packet: what to put on the contact line, what to type in Workday and Greenhouse fields, and which mismatch you have.

Knockout questions can finish the job. Willing to relocate left blank, or answered No because you overthought the wording, auto-disqualifies even when the resume is clean. For how those yes/no fields close a file, read why job portals reject resumes automatically .

How to get a job in another state when the city field mismatches

Three causes look like the same silence. Diagnose before you rewrite bullets. Match the tell, then apply that fix only.

Cause 1: Header city does not match the req metro

Parsers grab the first lines as contact data. City and state land in a location field. The req is tagged Chicago, IL or hybrid three days in Austin. If the imported city is Tampa and nothing on that same line names Chicago, the recruiter filter never shows you.

Tell: Resume preview in the portal shows Tampa, FL and nothing else in location. The posting names a different metro. You did not answer a relocate question, or the form never asked and the header has city only.

I've screened out-of-state stacks in Workday and Greenhouse location filters where the Tampa header never appeared on a Boston req until someone opened the PDF by name.

Before: Header: Tampa, FL | email | phone. Applying to a Chicago onsite operations analyst req. Summary mentions open to new cities in sentence four.
After: Header: Tampa, FL | Open to relocation to Chicago, IL | email | phone. Portal current city Tampa. Willing to relocate Yes. Preferred location Chicago.

Fix: keep the real city. Put the req city on the same contact line. Mirror current city in the form. Do not invent a Chicago present address. Street address still does not belong. City plus relocation does. See should you include an address on a resume in 2026 for what stays in the header besides the move note.

Cause 2: Relocation is buried in the summary paragraph

A summary that says willing to relocate for the right opportunity feels complete. Recruiters filtering by city never hunt paragraph three. Humans who would have forgiven Tampa never get the file if the metro screen already ran.

Tell: Paste the header into Notepad. City sits alone. The word relocate appears later, under Summary or Skills, not beside phone and email.

Before: Header Cleveland, OH only. Summary: Dedicated RN seeking a Phoenix hospital role; willing to relocate; family is flexible. Cover letter paragraph four repeats the move.
After: Header Cleveland, OH | Open to relocation to Phoenix, AZ. Summary stays two lines of unit type and ratios. Letter adds Relocating within 45 days of offer if that is true. Skills does not list relocation.

Fix: move the signal to the contact line. Strip relocate from Skills. Leave the summary for scope, tools, and a dated outcome. Exact header templates live in the relocate post in Read more. Do not copy that whole playbook here. You only need the signal on the line the parser treats as contact.

Cause 3: Portal fields contradict the resume

Workday and Greenhouse ask current city, sometimes preferred location, and often willing to relocate as yes or no. The resume can be perfect and the form still kills you. Blank relocate is not a maybe. A portal city that does not match the header looks like two people. A portal city set to the req metro while the resume still says your real city looks like a fake.

Tell: After submit, the application preview shows a different city than line two of the PDF, or relocate is unanswered. You clicked through knockout screens on a phone and guessed.

Before: Resume Dallas, TX. Portal current city Chicago because you wanted to look local. Willing to relocate left blank on a Chicago hybrid req.
After: Resume Dallas, TX | Open to relocation to Chicago, IL. Portal current city Dallas. Willing to relocate Yes. Preferred location Chicago. Optional letter: Available to start in Chicago within 30 days of offer.

Fix: current city is always real. Relocate is Yes when you would actually move for that req. Preferred location is the posting metro. If the wording is vague, answer the way the posting is written: onsite in that city means Yes if you will go. Do not treat knockout fields like a cover letter.

How to tell which mismatch is yours

Open last night's upload. Run three checks in order. Stop at the first fail.

  • Portal preview location equals the header city. If the preview is blank or a different metro, you have Cause 1 or Cause 3.
  • Notepad paste of the top six lines includes the req city or Open to relocation. If relocate only appears in Summary, you have Cause 2.
  • Willing to relocate is Yes on that application, not blank. If you cannot remember, open the confirmation email or the candidate portal and look. Blank is Cause 3 even when the PDF is clean.

You can have two causes at once. Fix the header, then the form. Do not start a new summary draft until both match.

Copy-paste: out-of-state application packet

Use this as a pre-submit checklist, not as a second resume. Change the bracketed cities per req. Keep current city honest every time.

Resume contact line:
[Real City], [ST] | Open to relocation to [Req City], [ST] | [email] | [phone]

Workday / Greenhouse fields:
Current city: [Real City], [ST] (must match header)
Willing to relocate: Yes (only if true for this req)
Preferred location: [Req City], [ST]
Earliest start: [N] days after offer

Cover letter timing line (optional field only):
Available to relocate to [Req City] within [N] days of offer. Current city remains [Real City].

Do not list [Req City] as current address.
Do not leave relocate blank.
Do not put the only relocation sentence in summary paragraph three.

Local-looking packets that still fail the screen

Clearing the filter with a lie, a vague nationwide line, or a remote header on a hub role still costs you the screen call. These are the packets that look clever and then collapse.

Faking the req city as your current city. It can pass a radius search. It fails when someone books an onsite this week, runs an address check, or compares LinkedIn Location to the PDF. Use real city plus Open to relocation. That is slower in the filter and honest on the call.

Nationwide on every file. Open to relocation nationwide is true for some people and noise for a Dallas onsite req. Name the posting metro on that apply. Keep a master list of two or three cities you would actually accept. Swap the one on the header. Do not spray one national line at five states and hope the filter infers Dallas.

Remote | US on a three-day hybrid. A San Jose hub that wants three days onsite is not a remote US req. Boise with no relocation note reads as unable to attend. Treat hub hybrid like an out-of-state onsite: real city, relocate or commute signal for that hub, portal Yes.

Before: Remote | US header on a hybrid req that names San Jose three days weekly. Cover letter says open to discussion.
After: Boise, ID | Open to relocation to San Jose, CA for hybrid. Bullet one stays a dated shipping metric, not a move essay.

Edge case: you are applying to four states this week. One master Experience section is fine. The contact line and preferred-location field change per posting. Save versions as Lastname_City_Role.docx so you do not upload the Chicago header to an Austin req.

Edge case: you are abroad and targeting a US metro. Keep your real country and city. Add Open to relocation to [US metro]. Put work authorization in the portal, not as a fake US address on line two. Employers verify identity and employment authorization on Form I-9 , not from a city you typed to look local. A false local header plus a visa surprise on the screen burns trust twice.

Edge case: you are drawing unemployment while you search across a state line. File the claim with the unemployment insurance program in the state where you worked. DOL unemployment insurance is a joint state-federal program, and if you already live somewhere else, the agency where you live can tell you how to file with the other state. A resume city line does not change that filing rule.

Edge case: the posting is local candidates only and never mentions relocation assistance. Skip it. A perfect packet does not override a fence the hiring manager already set. Spend the tailored file on reqs that name the metro and do not forbid movers.

Test the packet before another hour of tailoring

A clean location line on a scrambled file still fails parse. Upload the same PDF you will submit and run a free ATS resume check against the posting. Confirm city, phone, and current title import in reading order. The checker will not write your relocate phrase. It will show whether the header even survived as contact text.

When the portal asks for a letter, do not paste the summary. Use one timing sentence after the header already carries the city. Generate a cover letter from the posting, then replace any relocation essay with the copy-paste timing line above. If the letter is optional and you have nothing but timing to add, skip it. A blank optional field beats a three-paragraph move memoir that the filter never reads.

Fix the contact line, then apply

How to get a job in another state starts with the contact line matching the req, not with a longer cover letter. Keep your real city. Name the posting metro on that same line. Answer the portal the same way. Leave relocation essays out of Summary and Skills.

Open tonight's target posting. Edit the header. Match current city and relocate Yes. Paste-test the top lines. Submit that packet. You will still see silence when teams pause hiring. You will lose fewer files to a city filter you could have cleared in ten minutes.

Run a free ATS check on the file before you upload. Fix location on your side. Let queue timing explain the rest.

Frequently asked questions

No. Keep your real current city on the resume header and in the portal current-city field. Faking the req city clears a filter until a screen call, background address, or same-week onsite request exposes it. Put Open to relocation to [req city] on the contact line and answer Yes on willing to relocate. Local-looking headers that are false cost more than an honest mismatch with a clear move signal.

Almost never. Recruiters running a metro screen use parsed city fields and form answers before they open attachments. A cover letter can carry move timing after you are already in the maybe pile. It cannot stand in for a header city and a relocate answer that already dropped you from the list. Fix the header and the portal first, then use the letter for a start-date line only.

Treat that as a hard fence unless the same posting also names relocation assistance or a relocation budget. Do not apply with a fake local address to test the fence. If the ad is silent on relocation and names one metro with onsite days, either skip it or confirm with the recruiter before you spend a tailored file. Applying into a local-only req from another state is not a resume problem. It is a req you cannot clear.

You can keep one master file, but the contact line has to name the metro on that posting. A nationwide line on every upload looks like spray-and-pray and still fails a city filter that expects Dallas or nothing. Change the target city on the header and in the portal preferred-location field per apply. Leave your real current city unchanged. Five honest targeted packets beat one vague national resume.

Skip relocation when the posting says remote anywhere in the US and names no hub office. Use Remote | US on the header and match the portal location to remote US if that option exists. If the ad is remote with quarterly onsite in a named city, treat it like a hybrid hub: keep your real city and add willingness to travel or relocate to that hub only when you would actually go. Mixed remote and relocate lines confuse the same filter you are trying to clear.
