Most rejection stories blame bullets. The quieter failure is simpler: recruiters can't call you because the ATS stored your phone number under Skills or left your email blank.
That's not a character flaw. It's a layout problem at the top of the file. Check your resume for free on the export you plan to upload and read what the parser pulls from lines one through five. If the name field's wrong, nothing below it gets a fair read.

When the header fails screening
The symptom is reachability, not grammar. You meet the years on the posting. Your bullets are specific. Recruiters still do not email you because the profile shows a garbled name, a missing phone field, or a city attached to the wrong person in a household merge.
Cause one: contact info in a column the parser reads last. Canva and Word templates love a left rail for email and phone. Greenhouse and iCIMS often import that rail after Experience, so search fields stay empty while the PDF looks fine.
Cause two: decorative separators in your name. Pipes, stars, or emoji between first and last name break name matching. Background checks and calendar invites need one clean string, not three tokens scattered on one line.
Cause three: a headline title where the name should be. Headers that open with Senior Product Manager import as if that phrase is your legal name. Title filters then miss you because the system never stored Product Manager on the right field.
Cause four: links that are not text. Icon buttons and tiny QR blocks vanish on paste. Recruiters who click from Workday get a 404 while your portfolio sits invisible in the attachment.
How to tell which cause you have: copy the upload into Notepad. If email and phone disappear, you are in cause one or four. If line one is a title, cause three. If your name splits across odd characters, cause two. One paste, one answer.

Pair the block with resume formatting errors that break ATS parsing if Notepad still shuffles lines after you flatten the header. The fix may be a table lower on the page, not just the top band.
Header traps that look professional
I've seen strong candidates filtered out in Lever because the parser stored their spouse's old email from a shared household PDF, which is why I treat the header paste test as non-negotiable before I trust any designer template.
Running headers and footers for contact info. Word repeats them on every page, but many ATS imports only the body once. Put contact lines in the body under your name, not in the margin band.
Two phone numbers. Recruiters pick one at random. ATS dedupe tools sometimes drop both. Keep the mobile you answer during business hours.
Salary or clearance tags in the header. A line like Senior Engineer | TS/SCI reads as a name variant. Move clearance to a bullet where it belongs with dates.
Photos and graphics. US corporate screens rarely want a portrait in the file. Images at the top also push text down in plain-text export. Skip them unless a posting explicitly asks for a separate attachment.
Trusting the portal preview alone. Previews smooth over missing fields. Notepad is rude and therefore useful. If they disagree, rebuild before you tailor bullets again.
Confirm extraction before you apply
After you flatten the header, run the same PDF through the free ATS resume checker and read the extracted name, email, and phone fields. If any are blank, fix layout before you spend an hour on keywords.

Reachable beats clever
Screening starts at the top of the file. When parsers cannot store your name and phone, the rest of the resume is a PDF attachment recruiters may never open. Flatten the header, paste into Notepad, and only then tune bullets for the posting.
