You got a $20 hourly offer and need the annual number for rent math, a loan form, or a Workday salary field. The headline answer is simple multiplication. The useful answer compares gross annual pay to what deposits after withholding, then checks whether that deposit covers your real monthly bills. If it doesn't, you'll know before you sign.
Job searching at this wage band is its own problem. You're not writing a finance textbook. You're deciding if the offer clears your budget and which no-degree postings to aim at next. Before you apply, check your resume for free so certifications and tool lines parse cleanly when you upload to hourly reqs.
Below: full-time and part-time annual math, gross vs take-home side by side, a monthly budget worksheet you can run tonight, and resume positioning for roles that commonly list near $20 an hour.
20 an Hour Is How Much a Year? Full-Time and Part-Time Math
Full-time gross annual pay is hourly rate times 2,080 hours. That is the standard conversion recruiters and payroll systems use for a 40-hour week across 52 weeks. At $20 an hour, the product is $41,600 per year before any withholding.
Part-time schedules change the total even when the hourly rate stays at $20. Multiply your actual paid hours per week by 52, then by $20. A 32-hour week lands at $33,280 gross per year. A 25-hour week lands at $26,000. Do not assume full-time math when the posting says part-time or variable hours.
| Schedule | Hours per week | Gross annual | Gross monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-time | 40 | $41,600 | $3,467 |
| Reduced full-time | 36 | $37,440 | $3,120 |
| Part-time | 32 | $33,280 | $2,773 |
| Part-time | 25 | $26,000 | $2,167 |
Overtime is not in that table. If you reliably pick up paid overtime at time-and-a-half, add those hours separately. A steady 5 hours of OT per week at $30 per OT hour adds $7,800 gross per year on top of the base $41,600.

Gross Pay vs Take-Home: What $20 an Hour Actually Deposits
Gross pay is what the offer letter quotes. Take-home is what hits your bank after payroll withholding. At $20 an hour full-time, those are not close enough to budget from gross alone.
Every W-2 employee pays the employee share of FICA: 6.2% for Social Security and 1.45% for Medicare on covered wages, per current IRS payroll tax rules . On $41,600 gross, that FICA slice is $3,182.40 per year, or about $265 per month, before federal or state income tax.
Federal income tax withholding depends on your W-4, filing status, and other income. State income tax ranges from zero in some states to a noticeable line item elsewhere. Benefits bought pre-tax (health premiums, HSA, retirement) shrink taxable wages further. There is no honest single net-pay figure that fits every reader.
| Line item | Full-time at $20/hr | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gross annual | $41,600 | $20 × 2,080 hours |
| Gross monthly | $3,467 | Annual ÷ 12 |
| Employee FICA (annual) | $3,182 | 7.65% of gross wages |
| After FICA only (monthly) | ~$3,202 | Before federal, state, benefits |
| Your actual deposit | Run your stub | Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator |
Budget from your last pay stub, not from the offer letter. Two $20-an-hour jobs in the same city can deposit different amounts when one employer charges more for health insurance or the worker claims different withholding.
A Monthly Budget You Can Run on Take-Home Pay
Once you know your average deposit, map it against fixed bills before you accept a commute or sign a lease. The worksheet below uses a hypothetical $2,900 monthly take-home after all withholding. Swap that top line for your real deposit from the last two paychecks averaged.

If the leftover line is negative, the hourly rate is not the only lever. Hours, benefits cost, commute fuel, and housing distance all move the same number. A $20 offer with a long unpaid commute can lose to a $18.50 offer next to a bus line when you run this sheet honestly.
And if you are comparing two offers, convert both to the same unit before you decide. Hourly to annual for a salaried box, or annual to hourly for a shift role. Mixed units on the comparison sheet have sunk more than one otherwise solid candidate.
No-Degree Roles That Commonly Post Near $20 an Hour
Wage bands move by city and shift. Instead of a national average list, search local postings and filter for hourly rates in the high teens to low twenties. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook is the right place to read what each occupation does before you tailor a resume, not to copy a single wage into your plan.
Roles that often show up in that band on hourly reqs, usually with certificates or on-the-job training instead of a four-year degree:
- Warehouse or logistics lead. Resume proof: WMS tools, pick-rate improvements, safety training dates.
- HVAC service technician. Resume proof: EPA Section 608 credential, equipment brands serviced, on-call coverage.
- CDL Class A regional driver. Resume proof: clean MVR, routes run, endorsements with Month Year.
- Dental assistant. Resume proof: radiography permit, chairside specialties, sterilization protocol training.
- Pharmacy technician. Resume proof: PTCB certification, inventory systems, prescription volume scope.
- Electrician apprentice or journeyman path. Resume proof: license stage, panel work, commercial vs residential sites.
- Medical billing specialist. Resume proof: clearinghouse tools, denial follow-up volume, coding modules completed.
- Property maintenance technician. Resume proof: HVAC/plumbing/electrical tickets closed, units covered, on-call rotation.
I've screened hourly-to-salaried promotions in Workday where the resume still listed a generic retail title and buried the forklift certification that justified the warehouse lead rate. Put the license or cert on its own line with Month Year. Name the tool in bullet one, not bullet six.
Before: Responsible for warehouse tasks and team support.
After: Led night shift pick team of 12 in Manhattan WMS, cut mis-picks from 2.1% to 0.7% in Q1 2026.
That bullet shape works because it names scope, tool, and a dated outcome recruiters can search. For broader career stability habits while you apply, see habits to future-proof your career .
When to Quote Hourly vs Annual on Applications
Portals ask for hourly, annual, or both. Match the field label exactly. A $20 answer in an annual box reads as twenty dollars per year to a filter, not twenty per hour.
- Hourly field at $20 full-time: enter 20 or 20.00 as directed.
- Annual field for the same job: enter 41600 unless the form says otherwise.
- Range field: use the posting band if listed; if not, anchor near your walk-away number after the budget worksheet.
For step-by-step portal wording, read how to answer desired salary on US applications . Then paste the posting into job match score and align your top three bullets to the certification and tool lines before you upload.
If you are rebuilding a file for hourly roles, start from a plain single-column layout in the free resume builder so licenses and dates import cleanly into Workday and iCIMS hourly reqs.
Check the file before you quote the number
Run your resume through HireFlow's free ATS checker before you apply to hourly reqs. Clean dates and licenses matter when you're quoting $41,600 on the form.
If the role asks for a cover letter, generate a cover letter that matches the same job title and dates on your resume before you upload.

Frequently asked questions
Multiply $20 by 2,080 hours, the usual full-time count for a 40-hour week across 52 weeks. That equals $41,600 in gross pay before taxes and benefits. Overtime, unpaid time off, or a shorter schedule changes the total.
Divide the annual gross by 12. At $41,600 per year, gross monthly pay is about $3,467 before withholding. Your deposit is lower once FICA and income tax withholding hit the check.
It depends on your W-4, state, pre-tax deductions, and benefits. Everyone pays the employee share of FICA on wages. Federal and state income tax vary too much to quote one net number here. Run your figures through the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator with your actual pay stub.
Postings vary by metro, but warehouse lead, HVAC service tech, CDL regional driver, dental assistant, pharmacy technician, electrician apprentice, and medical billing roles often list in the high teens to low twenties on hourly reqs. Filter local ads, then match your resume to the certification and tool language in those postings.
Match the unit the form asks for. Hourly box gets 20. Annual box gets 41600. Mixing units is how candidates get filtered out before a human reads the file. See our guide on desired salary fields if the portal wants a range instead of a single number.
